So I adore Doctor Who, and ert has gotten me hooked on Firefly, although I was dubious about it at first. (Now I'm desperately trying to stretch the episodes out as long as possible.) We also have been watching BSG, which, while it had a good first season, has been declining in quality since then, in my opinion. But I'm still enough into it to want to ( Read more... )

I am! I'm halfway through already. But geez, enough with the soap opera. Could we, you know, have, like, a *plan*? That thing that they emphasize the Cylons have in *every episode*? Cause maybe the Cylons have one, but the writers sure as hell don't.

Why am I not shocked that you recommended *exactly* the same shows that I was about to?

Sick minds think alike, or something like that...

And lest you think that British sci-fi is all good lately, avoid Primeval at all costs. *shudder*

I was spectacularly underwhelmed by Torchwood.

I will respond to the most-indented (is that lowest level or highest level?) comment in the hopes that livejournal will send mail to all of you and say that yes, I also adore Torchwood. I was absolutely thrilled by the end of the season finale and, well, I don't want to post spoilers after my declamation above, but I can't wait. I will investigate "Brisco County Junior" and "Wonderfalls", but I'm not really a TV sort of person, despite my post. Also I have started on The L Word, which despite myself I am being lured into, since LESBIANS.

I was never into Buffy, but I suppose eventually somebody's going to tie me to a chair and make me watch some of that, too.

I did like the season finale of Torchwood, except I don't expect them to pay it off, really. Frankly, I'd like Torchwood more if it wasn't supposed to be in the Doctor Who universe. (I think that's my biggest problem with it, and that's really just a personal quirk.)

Briscoe County is cute. Wonderfalls I missed. The L word seems to be slowly colonizing everyone I know. I find myself in the situation you are with Buffy for it. :)

Only watch seasons 1-3 of Buffy. Or even just 2-3.

Oy Torchwood... I liked the second half of the season but struggled through the first 4 episodes or so before I acquired a taste for it. Have you seen the Sarah Jane Smith spinoff yet? Only one episode so far.

I've already seen all of Season 28/2, months and months ago.

No, after the episode where she meets Doctor 10, there was a spinoff produced, the first episode of which aired this New Year's. It's more kid-oriented.

Add a third to that chorus of voices. And Deadwood too.

Yeah, well, you know my feelings on it.

Most of the shows have disappointed me of late - Season 2 of new Doctor Who was weak. Torchwood became lame soap opera "queer as folk with aliens" as well.

BSG Season 3... the Love Rhombus got REALLY GODDAM ANNOYING.

Reading stuff from Moore, we see he has a plan for season 4. He says he always had broad arc chapters planned. I am suspicious. Certainly he admits that a key element of Season 3 he came up with at the beginning of season 3 and was not originally planned that way.

Mostly though I think what happened was that the ratings started to tank, and so the demand from the suits was "more sexy young people in angst!". Sadly, that wasn't why there were good ratings in the start.

I think Season 28 (or 2, whatever) was not as tight as the Christopher Eccleston season, but I think there were good reasons for that as well as some bad, and I did like it a lot more than you did. I did, however, totally call the big reveal of "The Parting Of The Ways" as soon as the sphere appeared--then said, "No, he couldn't possibly be *that* much of a raving fanboy." How wrong I was.

Like I said above, I love Torchwood--it's intended to be more soap operatic and I think it works. (Also, all the sexual fluidity has got me hooked.)

As for BSG, well, he's got a whole year to hammer out a plan. Let's hope he does so.

I swtich between thinking of it as 28 or 2. :-)

It isn't as tight, and I agree there are good and bad reasons for it. I had the exact same reaction in the big reveal. And yeah, I believe I commented on it in LJ when he was revealed to be that much of a fan boy. (Worse, when he was that much of a fan boy but didn't focus on it.)

I like the sexual fluidity of Torchwood. It's probably the thing I like the most about it.

I think the best thing in the world for BSG would be for him to say "I have 22 episodes, I will end the whole story now." The ratings slide means he's not going to get a 5th season if he tries to stretch it out, I think.

*That* would be fantastic. A complete story arc? That would make up for the overall mediocrity of Seasons 2 and 3. Do I think he'll do it? No.

I think he might if he thinks (very early in Season 4 shooting) that he's not going to get renewed or if he thinks a new project is over the horizon.

I'm not counting on it, though.
