PART II

I was 16 when I met her, and we love to tell people when we crossed paths for the first time. I had been chasing this girl for some weeks now, really good looking, older than me and knew very well she could get me to do just about anything she wanted. Which usually meant buying her stuff or making me driver her places. I think I stayed in her company because I thought it’s what guys my age were supposed to do. It wasn’t that hard for me to get her attention, since I looked older than I was, dark hair and baby blue eyes, which I covered with glasses. My dad is the one to thank for my perfect vision, but I did get his height and broad shoulders.
After school one lovely afternoon I take her down to “HOLY COW!”, the local -cool- place to grab a bite to eat. On and on she went talking about how she needed a new outfit to go to some family event next weekend. Of course I was to provide the funds for her lil’ trip to the mall.
“Oh come now Vanson, see it as an investment! You do want me to look hott don’t you? Vanson? Are you evening listening to me?!”
“Not really.” My attention was drawn else where by now. Two girls were going at it in the parking lot. None of this hair pulling stuff either, real fist on fist action! And it was obvious which girl was winning. She seemed smaller than the other girl, light brownish hair, slim, but not to a point where it was disgusting, a very attractive body I thought. The fact that she was smaller didn’t stop her from tossing her opponent onto the hood of my car! I didn’t know how to react; this girl just grabbed someone of a bigger size and threw her some feet away. It took me a while to realize I now had a huge dent on the hood of my car. Anger should have been my first reaction but instead I smiled and let out a dumbfounded “WOW”
“Vanson, you should sue her! Look at your car, its ruined! Were going to have to be driving around in THAT now?!!!”
“Shut up.” Man it felt good to tell her that. Even though she kept on talking, I made my way closer to my car, closer to this girl. She was cute, but I didn’t make any eye contact with her because she still looked very upset. The crowd that had formed was already starting to clear out. Yet she still stood right next to the car. Finally I drew up enough courage and with sweaty palms I approached her.
“Uh, hi.”
“Hey,”
“M-may I say, that was amazing.” I’m such a dork; I could hear my voice slightly shaking.
“Not really but thanks.”
“Could I ask what the fuel to launch that attack was?”
“I caught her cheating on my brother just now. I confronted her, and she wanted to take it outside. So I did and put her in her place, on the pavement. She punches like a sixth grader.”
Then she smiled. Oh sweet mother of all that is beautiful.
“My name is Lucy by the way. I’m going to stick around long enough to talk to the owner of this car, I feel terrible! I just hope the cops don’t show before then.”
“Oh they won’t.” finally I started making my way closer to her.
“And how do you know that? You got a police scanner on you or what?”
A sense of humor, I’m falling in love.
“No. But this is my car; nice to meet you Lucy, I’m Vanson.”

We were inseparable from that moment on. She became my girlfriend, my partner, my very favorite person in the world. We finished high school together and college, and started our lives. We went through hell and then some. My father died, her brother committed suicide. My car got stolen while Lucy took it to work one day, and she tried to stop him. That bastard almost left her dead, but she’s a strong women. I got diagnosed with an inherited heart condition that apparently can be fatal under a mass amount of stress- BULLSHIT I say. Many other things good and bad got thrown our way, yet we still had each other. My Lucy, the reason why I wake up in the morning.
We had been together eight years when I finally had enough money to buy the ring I wanted, and I asked her to be my wife..
“About time!” she said instead of the expected “yes!” But this was a reason why I loved her so much.
One evening I decided to take Lucy out. We hadn’t done anything in a while, with all the traveling Lucy did for some weird office job that I don’t even understand, and me visiting my mom in the hospital. We ate dinner then caught a late show at the movies. I prefer late shows because nobody goes at that time. No crying babies, no cell phones. Normally I actually like watching the movie in full, but that night I couldn’t help myself. I leaned to kiss her neck, and surprisingly she turned her head and kissed back. I was expecting a pinch on the arm or something, but hey I didn’t complain. The movie finished and so did the credit roll. Needless to say I wanted to get this lovely lady home fast! Well to mine that is.
“Van I forgot my purse inside!”
“Don’t worry I’ll go get it. Tell you what, here are the keys, start the car and I’ll be out in a second.”
Taking one last glance at her I winked and ran inside. To this day I wish I hadn’t left her alone.
I finally found that stupid bag; one of the workers of the clean up crew had given it over to the manger. So off to the manager’s office I went. Turns out I graduated with the guy. He seemed to talk forever till he gave me the bag and I finally was able to make my way back outside.
When I got to the parking lot, there were a lot of people running around. All huddled around one particular area. I thought the worst and ran as fast as I could and shoved my way through the crowd. And then I saw her.
My precious Lucy.
Lying in a puddle of her own blood. Holding what seemed to be a dead little boy.
I dropped down next to her and held her lifeless body in my arms and let out a cry that didn’t sound like it came from any human being.
