Ode to Spell checking

Oct 19, 2008 14:11

This was posted on the Goth Forum I seem to spending most of my time on in the run up to Whitby. It's a nice place, full of people who like the English Language. This is an absolute corker for all grammatical types, you'll love it!

I had a cola moment when I read it (don't drink coffee).

*Grins*, sticky keyboard. I never drink when reading LJ (or similar) just isn't safe.

Hee. That's cute! There's no substitute for using your *brain*. Though with my students, the spell checker does get at least 50% of their errors, which weren't words in the first place. (I teach English language learners from a variety of other language backgrounds.)

Brains aren't always easy to find. Mine frequently hides when I'm looking for it.

It annoys the hell out of me when people post fic that has obviously been spell checked but not read through. Those are the sorts of mistakes you don't really need a beta for, you should be able to pick up on them yourself - unless you happen to be using English as as second language. I couldn't even attempt to write anything in another language so I really admire people who do.

it reminds me of the clip I posted a few months back, the impotence of proofreading

I thought that was brilliant too. Possibly why I thought of you when I saw this...

I think the only thing that is more difficult to read is leet or text speak. One of the guys off the goth forum did a post a while back explaining why it wasn't a good idea to use a lot of leet/text speak in posts, entirely composed in text speak. The general reply was WTF did that say? I think he got the point across quite well...

Heh! Yeah!

I've never heard the term 'leet' before.

It's a geek thing, short for Elite, kind of. It's even worse to read than text speak.

This is Leet...

Leet is not a common internet speak among real hackers.

See what I mean?

Never mind my brain hurting, I think you've made mine go into meltdown with that link. That's badfic as well as poor language though. Does that put it in a class of its own?
