In conclusion, down with portmanteaux.

My sentiment exactly.

For me it comes down to an individuality thing - I have had to fight to be seen as myself and to *be* myself at times. I threw a wobbler when someone addressed me (on an envelope) as Mrs P xyz (P being the exes intial) - I was like "I do have my own name and I am entitled to have people address me by that" I have always been happy to be known by his surname as it was MY choice to take it and I continue to use it, even though we aren't together, as it represents a huge portion of my life which I don't want to forget.

So, as you may have gathered, names are important to me.

Same goes for characters that are important to me. Every time someone ships a pairing and then uses the 'trendy' portmanteaux name, I shudder. It's like they're subsuming the characters into this single entity that is LESS than its individual parts, not more (I use smushed partly as I sometimes wonder if some people who use them have ever heard of the word portmanteaux and also because my spelling can be atrocious and smush is easier).

In Torchwood fandom the use of 'Janto' tended to be prevalent among a certain type of fan/fic writer and they were generally the batshit ones who wrote woobie, feminised Ianto or just plain couldn't write (and weren't willing to accept concrit) or even wouldn't accept that any other pairing in Torchwood could even exist and poured hate on those who didn't rate 'Janto' as their #1 ship. So yeah, if I hadn't already hated them, that would have been enough to make sure I did!
