I had a thought the other week (no, please, don't die of shock). I realised that some of my newer friends might not be familiar with the wonderful quirkiness that is the Dresden Files tv series. Now I know some fans of the books can't get on with the tv series and some fans of the tv series really don't get the books but me, I love both.
Seeing as I'm writing a tv verse Dresden and BBC Sherlock crossover, I thought it was high time to have a burble and a picspam to familiarise the unfamiliar. Plus, decorative wizards, snarky ghosts and strong women should be able to give you a smile even if you don't know them. Which is a good thing as my friend Mandy needs something to smile about right now.
So, this is for for Mandy, any and all interested parties and the Dresden fans out there.
Who is Harry Dresden, besides being another wizard called Harry and the only wizard in the Chicago phone book? Who are his friends? His enemies? The ones he's not quite sure about? The answers to some of these questions can be found behind the cut...
This is Harry Dresden, a PI with a difference; a professional wizard who helps out the Chicago police with some of their more unusual crimes.
His dad was a stage magician - Harry was named after Harry Houdini - but his mother had the more esoteric type of magic, which she passed on to her son. She was a Morningway by birth, who were an old and powerful family in the magical community and when Harry found himself an orphan he was brought up by his uncle, Justin Morningway, for a while. It was when Harry lived with his uncle that he met his teacher, who later became his friend, Hrothbert of Bainbridge. Like any self-respecting wizard, Harry uses a staff and a wand but his take the more every day form of a hockey stick and drum stick.
Hrothbert of Bainbridge was a talented practitioner of magic way back in 900 Ad or thereabouts. He fell in love, hard, with a sorceress named Winnifred and when she died he used black magic (The Black) to resurrect her. For this, he was condemned to death and his soul was sealed for all eternity into his own skull as punishment. He has seen many things come and go, particularly in the magical world, and is both a useful and dangerous resource.
He is now known as 'Bob' - a name given to him by Harry - and although he remains tied to his skull, with Harry as his guardian he has a degree of freedom which he has probably not been accorded previously. He also helps Harry out when the magic stuff gets a bit complicated and offers helpful advice, even when it's not needed or wanted. Oh and he may be a ghost, a cursed one at that, but he still has feelings!

The Chicago PD will sometimes ask for Harry Dresden's help as he gets results in cases that don't always make sense. The person who usually calls him in is Lieutenant Connie Murphy who has no idea how Harry does what he does, and doesn't really want to think about it either - it doesn't fit in with her idea of the world. However, she's a good cop and as Harry helps her get results, often when all else has failed, she's prepared to forgive him a lot though she does have limits.

Harry works from home, which is in an old industrial building. The 'office' is at one side of the apartment, his living space at the other and there is a secret basement or lab that houses the 'heavy' magical paraphernalia. He avoids complex electronics as they don't go at all well with magic; this includes modern fridges, phones, cookers and cars which means he drives a 1950s jeep as it is less likely to die on him.
This is the 'office' side. The other person in the pic is Morgan, a Warden of the High Council - essentially a sort of magical policeman. Morgan and Harry have a somewhat turbulent relationship - not friends, but not quite enemies either - though they do have a degree of respect for each other.
This is the 'living' side.
(BTW, the guy who plays Harry in the series is Paul Blackthorne who is 6'3", bookverse Harry is even taller)
