up until a few hundred years ago, religion was a ploy to get people to work
this 'notion of obligation' we feel every morning before work is the last remnant of the Protestant work ethic.
only fools believe that welfare is a bad thing. welfare is an essential part of the economy. people who would normally have no money to spend are able to grease the wheels of our society, this money would not be spent otherwise.
plus, this consumption provides anonymity to those who receive welfare. the 'welfare cadillac' is a prime example of this.
the history of humanity is the history of work.
