Disclaimer: this isn't really a meme, rather a series of questions I ganked from
synnesai ; they seemed interesting though, I feel like answering them. If anyone else does, go right ahead.
1. What is it, specifically, about your current fandom that's got ya in a tizzy?
2. How do you best handle stress?
3. What inspires you right now in life?
4. If you could've been born in a different time period, what would it be and why?
5. If you had unlimited cash, what would be the first thing you bought?
1. My current fandom is Homestuck, and I guess...nothing, really. It's such a tiny fandom that the asshole quotient is really low, and most people you talk to are great fun. So I guess if I were to complain about anything, it would be that not enough people have looked this up. It's seriously a diamond in the rough; I know people who have complained about the relatively simplistic art, but it has a purpose, and the writing is just top-drawer. Highly recommended.
2. Mostly by realizing that whatever I'm stressing about isn't worth it. I'm good at taking a step back and putting things in perspective; when I do poorly on a test, I just realize I have to study harder next time; if I procrastinate on a project, I get down to it and finish it when it needs to get done; if I worry about money, I know my parents would never cut me loose, so I can get on to other things. Even bad things, like the two cars I've wrecked, while earth shattering in the moment, are dealt with easily over time.
3. My friends, my family, good stories. Sounds cliche, but it's true. I feed off success and happiness; the more the people close to me are enjoying themselves, the more I do. As for good stories, I've read a few books and seen a few movies lately that have given me a nice creative buzz; I'm writing more now than I have in years.
4. That is a really tough question. I'll preface an answer with this: it sounds terrible, but my being a white male gives me a nice pass on racial and gender strife, although being of European descent kind of locks me out from any of the Asian cultures I might be interested in. The Italian Renaissance would be really cool to live in, as would the heydays of Greece or Rome. If I were to limit myself to periods in the twentieth century, I'd have to say either the sixties or the nineties; the sixties because it was the most tumultuous and interesting decade in American history, and the nineties because all my favorite music came out then.
5. Well, I'm sure it would take me a little while to adjust my scope as to what qualifies as expensive and cheap, so I'd probably start with something like a video game console, then gradually work my way up (high end desktop computer, nice car, pay off college tuition, find a permanent house or nice apartment near school, etc.).
In other news, I'm making a bow. I have a friend who literally doesn't buy things if he thinks he can construct them, and to that end he's either built or is building things that usually are only mass produced, or else take years of practice to perfect, like a motorcycle, or a revolver, or a computer, and most recently a bow. It's actually really simple; you cut the whole thing out of a single piece of wood, sand it to shape, bend it, and fit the bowstring on. The bowstring determine the length of the bow; my string is 64 inches, so the bow is roughly six feet end to end. There's a certain science to figuring the latter from the former, but I mostly just took my friend's advice on this one. Anyway, mine is currently at the sanding stage, which is horribly tedious, but once I'm done it's pretty close to being ready to fire. Fun stuff!
