Petting The Squirrel....

Yes, I am a little special ;0) I have chosen to keep a squirrel as a pet. The original video is much lighter than this, and I will be trying to edit it to see if I can lighten it up. This was taken just after I got back from Venezuela on December 23rd.

This was a terrible story that I really thought was going to have a terrible ending.

The video was taken a day after I found my squirrel nearly dead. It was Aedan's responsibility to feed the squirrel, as Jav cannot touch her. I had her in the spare bedroom where I keep her whenever I leave town. Last time I went to Venezuela, Aedan did a good job giving her water and feeding her. This time, it was obviously something much different.

When I walked into the room, she came to my feet but didn't climb up me as she always does. I picked her up, and she screeched. She was skin and bones. I immediately went to Aedan and asked him what in the world was going on with my animal. He tried to tell me that he fed her and gave her water, but in the room, only found evidence that he may have done that once - IN 9 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

During the day, I made four attempts to get fluids in her. Everytime, she threw it up. I was terrified. Finally on the fifth attempt, she took some gatorade and went to sleep on my shoulder. I woke up in the morning with her cleaning herself, nuzzled in my armpit on the bed. This was a good sign!

I gave her some fruit and veggies, as I always do, but she was too weak to pick up the big slices. So, I cut up smaller pieces. She was holding everything down, but I was still concerned about permanent damage to anything along her digestive and waste system.

About two weeks ago, I took her to the vet for the first time. I was concerned that she may have a bladder infection. It turns out that she was only dribbling pee because she was going into her first, full heat. Squirrels do not mature until they are about 14-16 months old. I had blood and urine tests done, and there is no kidney damage. Phew!
