Spring Anime 2009: Eden of the East - where showing your Johnny is a hit

*revives myself from the dead*

Was the first episode supposed to be this good? Well, okay, this is directed by Kenji Kamiyama so that must merit to something, but for the guy who made the cold yet intelligent Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and the almost impersonal yet solidly developed Seirei no Moribito, Eden of the East is utterly baffling (and awesome, don't worry) in its light-heartedness (for the first episode, granted that might just change in the future, judging by the inclusion of terrorism in the plot, but still, if the execution in the first episode is anything to go by, then...) and charm of the two lead characters. The animation is smooth and the background crisp and incredibly detailed and well-researched, typical of Production I.G.

Honestly, after the disappointing Real Drive, this is a breath of fresh air.

Oh, and its got Umino Chica's character designs which is already unexpected in itself, not bad, really, if anything, I don't think the episode would have worked as much if I.G. used their usual semi-realistic character designs. Really charming (I am soooo running out of superlatives, sorry). And Morita! Hagu!
