When I was in Japan, I noticed that a lot of girls seem very concerned with their appearance as well. I can understand how you would feel a little out of sorts. I think it's ridiculous to be honest. They're all like perfect, little dolls waiting to be plucked off the shelf by some guy. I think the more time you spend on your outward appearance (especially to the degree that they do), the more you start losing some part of who you are on the inside.
But I also feel bad for the women over there too because of how the men, and society really, treats them. When store fronts are displaying topless photos of women, it's bound to create this idea that women are a commodity. I feel like they don't get any respect. Maybe it's the American in me, I dunno. There is a young woman Tony works with at the Japanese company he works for, and they entered at the same time and are working on similar things. His Japanese boss (who is also hers) was going on some two day trip, and the Vice President (who is also Japanese) asked if he was taking Tony with him. He said no, he would rather take the young woman (and I know it had nothing to do with her work ability, because she's not that great and she can't even speak Japanese). I was really disgusted to here it, but I think that's just how men from there are.
I know Japanese women are under a lot of pressure to get married young, which doesn't help matters. When you're throwing yourself at men because society dictates that you have a marriage clock that runs out at 25, you sort of have to settle. /rant.
What do you want to know about cameras? I've done a lot of research in the past for higher end models, but I'm sure that normal point and shoots have similar features. I'd be glad to give you a hand, Em.
I'm okay with people who take care of themselves--God knows, one of the problems I have finding a guy is I want one who isn't afraid of a little extra effort in that department--but only if they're doing it for themselves. And also, no matter who you're doing it for, it shouldn't take more than, say, an hour when you're putting yourself together in the morning, and then touch-ups shouldn't take more than a minute or two on a normal day.
I don't worry too much about the visibility of porn. People who want it will go looking for it, and people who don't care pass it by. I dislike how in America, as long as the nipples aren't showing it's okay. It doesn't really make sense when you can see everything else anyway, so why not just go for the whole thing and be done with it? Women are objectified almost everywhere in some way or another, just the angle is different. The only thing I don't like is the attitude Japanese porn takes, where women can't enjoy or pursue sex of her own will; the only way to make a woman enjoy it is by more or less raping her. >_______<
Yeah, I was shocked when people at this company would openly say stuff like, "Isn't it tough to have a girl intern?" and the men would say, "No, having girls around is better!" and stuff like that. Sometimes I knew they didn't mean anything weird by it--one of these times was from one of my bosses who's actually a pretty nice old man, if a little strict--but other times I could tell they were implying they had something nice to look at all day or something. And it's funny, even though people were saying my real clothes were too flashy/too sexy for work, I feel like I'm even more defenseless (?) by being forced to wear the uniform. It covers up more, but I feel like I'm being fetishized... like when people roleplay with those stereotypical nurse outfits and maid outfits. "I'm Office Girl Barbie! Good morning, Boss! Here is your mail~"
I've talked to the married guys before, and I know the Japanese are usually unwilling to talk about private things to strangers and stuff, but since everyone was asking me what kind of guy I like, I figured I'd ask them about their wives. I was sad to hear that most of them just kindof married the girl because they "suki" her, but they don't have any of the same interests, and apparently don't even spend much time together. It's weird, I don't get it at all!!! No wonder everyone thinks I should just marry a Japanese boy because he's "nice," that's what girls do here too!!!
hmm... well, my old one was more or less a point and shoot type, very easy to use... my dad says it's a Pentax Optio SX5 or SZ5, which is discontinued now, but it was a good camera with a wide angle lens, something like 35 / 107. I would like something like that or better, as compact as possible, since I would have to carry it around with me all the time. I'm sure I'll end up spending more than it would have cost to just repair the thing in the end, but oh well. Any suggestions? Oh, I also don't know what brands they'll be selling here, but I definitely want something where I can change the menu commands to English. I have no patience for following just the icons on things.
Well the important thing to keep in mind about point and shoots is that megapixels matter (this isn't the case with SLR cameras). I'm not sure how Japan is, but I know that nowadays you'd probably be hard pressed to find anything lower than 8 or 10 megapixels. You'll want a camera with an image stabilizer (usually the model number will be followed by IS, or at least that's how it is with canon cameras). A nice range of ISO is always a plus. ISO has to do with lighting and image quality sort of. Face detection self timer is really great to have as well.
I used to dislike cameras that ran on batteries, but now that I have another one that I can use rechargeable AAs, I find it much more convenient than one that can be be recharged by a computer. Just my opinion though!
What I might suggest is that you find a camera that you like that you can get in America, and then try to find the equivalent specs on a Japanese camera. I have a Canon right now, and I love it. My little Kodak served me well though too. If you find one in particular that you're interested in, I'd be happy to take a look at it. :)
