I ran across this question in a discussion and I have to admit that my mind went completely blank. I couldn't think of a single female protagonist that really stood out as a favorite of mine just off hand. Out of the favorite fantasy books that came to mind first the protags were male. I may be able to come up with a great female protag much later but for now the only two characters that came to mind were not fantasy novel characters but from TV and literature. The first being Emma Peel from the British TV series The Avengers from the 1960's. Mrs. Peel was capable, very intelligent, independent, strong, successful in her own right, funny, elegant and classy. The other character is Elizabeth Bennett from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth is intelligent witty, funny, knows her own mind and heart and is strong even in an era where women's power was negligible.
Here is the question that started this, see if your memory can do better than mine just at the mo.
