So here's a basic tutorial on how to configure
Colloquy on Mac OS X. Colloquy is a very easy to use and well-designed IRC/IBC/SILC/XMPP client for Mac OS X that makes chatting on these protocols simple and aesthetically pleasing.
1. Hit up
http://colloquy.info/ and grab the latest Colloquy release. At the time of this writing, the latest version is 2.2.1.
2. Once you've downloaded the application, drag it to your Applications folder as normal when you're installing a new application then fire it up.
3. The first thing you should do is set up a new connection. Go to File > New Connection....
4. In the New Connection window, fill out the information. Your Nickname is how you will be identified once you're in the chat. This can be changed anytime and to anything (even someone else's nickname! although most servers offer ways to prevent someone stealing your name when you're not looking). Leave Server Protocol as IRC (Internet Relay Chat). In Chat Server, enter irc.foonetic.net. Check Remember This connection so you don't have to reenter this information every time you log in.
5. Now you should have an entry for irc.foonetic.net in the Connections window. Click it and then click the lightning bolt Connect.
6. Once you're connected, you'll need to join the #groovysmoothie channel. To do this, select irc.foonetic.net and then click Join Room. A box will pop up. Enter #groovysmoothie into the Chat Room field. Click Join.
7. Congratulations! You just joined the #groovysmoothie channel! The chat window should be familiar to everyone. From here, you can poke around in Colloquy's options to get things configured just right, or Google around to learn more about different IRC commands and stuff. Or you can just start chatting!
