carbon offsets: on the smartness of PG&E's "ClimateSmart"

I -- and presumably everyone else in NorCal -- got spammed with a plug for PG&E's "ClimateSmart" program with last month's bill. Google pulls up a critique of ClimateSmart by one Joseph Romm which sounds like reasonably sound evidence that the program isn't really worth the paper its flyers are printed on. I figured I'll throw this up here in case any of y'all have anything to say on the matter.

It would be nice if PG&E set up something to make it easy for us lazy types to pitch in our fair share for the environment -- even if they get it partially wrong, it'd be a step in the right direction. After reading the critique above, though, it seems like there are no steps forward here at all.

(Well, in particular, I've heard some friends from Portland speak well of PGE's "Green Source" program and have ever since been hoping that something like that would pop up here so, err, I don't have to feel guilty for not living in Portland? NB: Much to my confusion, PG&E!=PGE)
