Even though I knew exactly what was going to happen, from moment to moment I was sitting on the edge of my seat. It’s one thing to read the comic books. It’s another thing entirely to see the story come alive, so to speak, on the screen.
The first episode followed the first few monthlies pretty closely. Rick Grimes, the main character and series hero, gets shot during a shootout with a bad guy and lands in the hospital in a coma. He wakes up a month later to find the hospital deserted. Well, almost deserted. The world has succumbed to a zombie plague.
The makeup and special effects are just incredible. I watched a lot of the behind the scenes videos that have been posted on AMC’s website so I knew it was going to be good but seeing it all come together on screen just blew me away.
After visiting his home and finding his wife and son gone, Rick meets a man, Morgan, who is squatting in his neighbor’s house. Morgan explains what’s happened and tells Rick that everyone was told to gather in Atlanta. Rick figures that’s where his wife and son are so he heads off to the city.
One of the amusing things for me in actually seeing the characters and hearing them speak, is the accent. I knew that the story took place in Georgia but somehow when I was reading the series my inner voice never read with a southern accent. That and, the actor who plays Rick, Andrew Lincoln, is actually British. It was strange to hear at first.
Anyway, Rick makes his way to Atlanta but finds the city over run by zombies. That’s where they leave off until next week.
If you are into really good zombie stories with an actual plot and superb special effects, definitely check this out. There is enough material from the comic books plus some original material I know they have written to keep this series going for a good long time. AMC has already renewed it for a second season. Here’s hoping they can keep up the pace and the quality.
