The air was cold in the massive gardens upon the estate but they were a place where she could get away. Aeon stood in the maze, tall brushes all around her, boxing her in. It was much like how she felt these days. Boxed in. Walls all around her too high to see over even with a jump. There was only one place to look to see freedom, and that was up. Boots shifted as her head tipped up. The clouds above hardly looked like they were even moving. And if they were it was slow motion, much like her life had been these past months. Arms closed in around her, she held herself tightly as she tried to push those thoughts of her captivity away and to other things.
The past was could be good.
She remembered the first mission she took on. It was a moment to be proud of. It was the hardest thing she had to do. If she succeeded, she would be free to go out on her own. No one there to guide her. No one there to tell her and punish her what she did wrong. She would be free of the collar that was around her neck. Free to make her own decisions and live her life as her own. It had been long in coming and now was the time.
There was no moon in the night sky. The air chilled by the coming cold spell. That night there was not a breeze, not a whisper of bug or birds flying about. The world seemed to be still, seeming to know what was to come. A dark figure made their way along the outside of the building. Dropping to ledges to small to even hold a bird only to bounce off and land upon another and another, working their way up to a window. Upon the edge, Aeon rested, eyes adjusting to the dark of the room. Carefully the window was opened. Curtain was pushed aside, a long booted leg slipped in. Soon the other followed with the body and immediately falling into a crouch.
What happened next was all a blur. As Aeon stood over the body, she seemed to not breath for several beats before she crouched down. Reaching into her boot, she pulled out her knife. A gift given to her by her teacher. She stared at it for a moment then used it to cut the material of the night shirt open. Next came the chest, a clean slice from neck to mid belly. Another at the top then the bottom. she used it to peel the flesh and muscle back. Blood spilled out over her boots before soaking into the rug. She reached into the chest, searching around, pushing aside lungs to get to the heart. There she found what she was searching for.
A small little key. She stood up with it in her hand. The small gold key gleamed with no light for the cause. Wiping her boot upon the body, she went into the bathroom. She turned the light on. She was before the mirror over the sink. Leaning forward, with gloved fingers, she took the key and placed it to her neck. The key and the slot of the collar around her neck matched perfectly and with a simple turn, it came open. The collar fell away, clattering in the metal sink. When she looked back up what was now looking back at her was a new woman.
She shut the light off as she left the small room but stopped at the body. She reached over to a vase, pulling out the flowers in it and tossed it on the body. "Rest in peace," She spoke before climbing out the window, "My Teacher."
