Please select one of the following:
a) Oh a friend has arrived, I'll ask them to join us since we're in a public room and it would be sociable. Or we can both head over to private to see them if you want. They may be a friend of yours too, but even if they are not, it would be nice of me to keep everyone together.
Polite, and friendly to boot.
b) Oh a friend has arrived, I'd like to go talk to them in private if that's ok. I may ask you to join us if we want your company, otherwise I'll just say "Bye for now" and you can assume I do not want to be disturbed unless I continue talking to you. Thanks.
Disappointing, but polite.
c) Oh a friend has arrived, I'll just leave silently to go see them in private. If you feel entirely unnecesary and cast aside because I've left you on your own to see someone more important, remember you can always invite yourself over, though if we did want the company I really would have invited you since that would be the polite way to do it.
Not polite, and makes people feel like discarded crap.
Note: The answer isn't c). At least, not as I understand things, unless inviting youself over is the done thing these days.
