Spoilers for those who haven't seen Season Three yet.
I'm not sure what I think yet. Yes, I agree with everyone who liked the episode, and their reasons for liking it: excellent acting, lack of wangst and melodrama, nice focus on all six main characters. I also applaud the acting of not only Jesse Spencer (home run!), but also Jennifer Morrison (at last, they write her character to be the mature, compassionate, intelligent woman she should've been all along!) and Omar Epps (yes, Foreman is a bastard, but it takes chops to convincingly act a bastard who thinks he's the good guy.) The elder three actors are, of course, note-perfect as usual.
But...I'm down about this episode, too. Maybe I'd feel better if there were firm confirmation that JS is returning as Chase; I guess I've been converted to a firm Chaser by this past season and my newly acquired DVDs of seasons 1 and 2. And no, I don't deny that the series is deservedly called House MD, and that Hugh Laurie is a genius actor. I just really loved the dynamic between House and Chase, and it really brings me down that the dismissal of Chase was essentially emotionless on House's part.
I didn't expect to see major angst and wangst about it, but...House displayed more attachment to his damn bloodstained carpet earlier this season than to someone who's moved up from subservient, frightened fellow to strong, confident, capable peer. It's not the fact that the firing was overly brutal--it almost would've been better if there had been shouting on House's part--it was that it seemed so cold. So I think that even if Jesse Spencer made a public announcement to all of his fans announcing that yes, he is DEFINITELY coming back for Season Four, I'd still be disappointed in this episode.
Because I don't know that the show is ever going to tackle the question of the "firing" again and the disruption of the relationship between House and Chase.
Now onto slightly more upbeat news for myself. Have completed several chapters of my first multichapter House fic, titled "Postcards from Ruritania" and am currently reading through it, attempting to self-beta...and trying to decided when to start posting. I think I'll try to post one chapter per week, but since the genre of this fic is more silly/humorous (okay, it doesn't start out that way, but it will definitely have its moments of fanfic-inspired crack), maybe I should wait a few days until the finale-inspired furor dies down.
I'll have to think about this.
