In order for Yuto to stop bugging me, I finally agreed that I’d try that Green Tea Frappe he’s been saying he loves at Starbucks.
So here we are, in his usual Starbucks branch, and I stood there looking at the menu. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t the first time I’ve been here. I usually go for the Fruit smoothies…
I looked behind me just because I feel like I’ve heard someone call my name. I’m not surprised. In a public place like this… it’s a normal thing for us to be called. It’s not like they’re calling us on purpose, but it’s just that, they know us. It can’t be helped. I pulled my facemask over my mouth - I honestly hate having to disguise but it’s for our own good. And since we’re all just hard-headed regarding avoiding crowded places when going out during day-offs, it’s a little price we have to pay.
I followed Yuto as he gets in line, and soon, the person up front was taking his order already. Yuto sure is a regular here - all the folks up on the counter seem to know him. Soon enough, it was my turn, and Yuto stayed beside me - making sure I order that frappe we agreed on.
“Yamada-san, ne?” This nice old lady smiled at me after handing me my change as she scribbles my name on that frappe cup.
Yuto and I stayed on one corner, waiting for our names to be called. It’s the usual thing. While Yuto was busy clicking away on his iPod, I was suddenly surprised as a girl behind me started talking in English. I reckon she’s a foreigner, and curious little me turned around to see if my hunches was right.
I frowned. Perhaps by surprise - two girls stood behind me and Yuto, they both look Japanese AND foreigner as the same time. It’s like some Juniors we have; those half-Japanese ones. But I reckon they’re half-Caucasian though. By their features, they both look like they’re Asian… not full Japanese, but still Asians.
“I find it really funny seeing people with masks on.. I know it’s a usual thing here, especially during flu season, but I still need to get accustomed to it I guess...” One of them spoke - she’s a bit taller than her companion and just by looking at her face and her tone of voice, I don’t know how I can tell that she’s older and less timid. She looks like the type who’ll knock down a guy - no questions asked. Don’t get me wrong, she’s not muscular at all. She’s of fair built, but something tells me she’s not the girly type. I looked away when I saw her looking at me. “He looks like he’s a celebrity. His face looks really familiar. Then again, they all look pretty much the same at some point…” She uttered. “Aaaaah…. It’s not really easy being a newbie here in Yokohama… I know nothing on who’s who…”
After a few seconds, I was debating whether I tell Yuto about this little observation I have about these girls; we do this often among the group when we have random talks during rehearsals. Hey, we’re guys too. I was lured back into looking behind me when I heard the other one spoke - her voice is relatively softer than the taller one, and I can tell she’s struggling between English and Japanese. She sounds fluent alright, but it’s as if she’s thinking whether to speak Japanese or English. “Ruu-chan, I think he can hear you.” I watched as she looked at me then look away, “I think he can understand English. He’s not that dumb.” This made the taller one, apparently named Ruu-chan, look at me.
“What?” She shrugged, “I didn’t really say anything offensive.” She looked at me again.
That’s it. I’m done looking at them. It’s true, I barely understood their small conversation, but I can tell they’re talking about me. I poked Yuto’s back and he immediately looked at those girls, “I can hear them.” Yuto uttered, surprising the heck out of me. Then he smiled, “That girl just defended you Yama-chan…”
“Shut up…” I pouted. How can he understand them? It’s so unfair. Maybe I should ask Keito for more lessons.
To my surprise, Yuto spoke, “Kichida-san?” He was looking at that taller girl, whose eyes were like yay-big suddenly.
“H..Hai…?” That Ruu-chan girl uttered rather suddenly - she’s was caught off guard. How the heck did Yuto know her name? And she was speaking in perfect Japanese at that friend of hers before she started walking…. I am shocked and confused but not really. What?
Bowing discreetly as she passed by me and Yuto, she approached near the counter and viola, her cup of hot drink was there and the name “Kichida” was written on it. Yuto was just being nice calling out to whoever’s the owner of this drink, so it seems.
“Thanks…” She uttered, as she walk back to her companion and Yuto just nodded and smiled at her.
I sighed… perhaps out of relief. I’m not even sure why. “I keep seeing her a few times here…” Yuto uttered, surprising me again, “But don’t tell anyone, okay?”
I chuckled, “I knew you come here because of something else other than your frappe…” I nudged him - teasing him a bit. Yuto’s just a whack to make fun of.
“No…” As expected - denial. This guy. I let it slip this time since Yuto’s was moving to the counter to take his drink. I can tell why they didn’t have to call his name. As Yuto stood beside me again, he looked at his watch, “Chii said he’ll be at the station in ten minutes…” he spoke, taking a sip then looking outside. “He’s probably walking his way here, I’ll stand by outside and wait for him there.”
I teased him one more time before agreeing, “I’ll just wait for my order then…” With that, Yuto was on his way out; I watched as he passed by that Ruu-chan/Kichida girl and to my surprise, Yuto stopped there and he’s actually talking to her. ‘That idiot…’ I thought to myself. It’s a hidden rule, you see, us idols have regarding our behaviour out in public. See if we become too friendly, it gets chaotic. But as I watch Yuto and that Ruu-chan girl have a few words, it seems that the environment we’re in permits it. I mean, this place is public, but perhaps most people here are regulars, they’re used to seeing Yuto, and maybe, he’s talked to lots of people here countless times. Honestly, maybe I should go out and socialize more often.
Faintly, I heard them talking about headphones. As I took a glance, I noticed that that Ruu-chan girl has the same headphones as Yuto. Why did I not notice that earlier? Apparently, that got Yuto talking. And again, little me being surprised - gosh, when will I not be shocked in this drabble!? - Yuto shook hands with both Kichida-san and that friend of hers and went of his way outside. How can that guy be so friendly!? I admit, I was envious. I wish I’m sociable like that. Pouting inside my head, I waited. It’s getting busy so I can understand why they take a while to get out stuff done.
Soon enough, after forever, I heard that nice lady call out, “Green tea Frappe for Yamada-san…”
And then... as I happily answered, “Hai” and just wanting to be out of here - and wanting to rant about Yuto’s talking skills, I went for that darn frappe, that lady on the counter looking at me weirdly, I thanked her and was on my way outside.
Yuto has his headphones on, air drumming again as usual, and I just stood there beside him and looked at the time. I took off my face mask and looked at this green thing inside my cup.
Yuto, finally noticing that I’m with him, took off his headphones and took a sip from his frappe, “Try it... It’s really good…” He smiled and kept bugging me so I did.
Gosh I wish I didn’t… “Urrrfffllrrrtt…” I held my lips closed. “What the heck is this!?”
“You’re so picky…” Yuto pouted, “It’s not that bad…”
“It’s non-fat…” I uttered, looking at this pale green thing.
Yuto frowned - we’re both examining my frappe. This cursed thing, “It does look a little weird.” Yuto said, “You had to be so health-conscious?”
I looked at him, a little anger creeping up my face, “I didn’t order non-fat!” I tried my best not to shout, but this things just… eugh…
Yuto was about to say something when he looks like he’s seen someone coming. I was about to turn around when… “Um… Excuse me…” This girl, with the softer voice, spoke behind me, tapping my shoulder.
I looked at her, and immediately, I was caught off guard. I didn’t get to see her face up close when we were inside the café, you see. And here, I can’t help but look at her slightly big brown eyes, under her glasses. There’s something about them, I can’t quite put into words. “…Hai…” Was all I could manage, and luckily, Yuto was quick to tap me back hard into reality… “H..hai…?” The second one sounded more casual - conversation-friendly.
“I think you got my frappe by accident.” She said, pointing at that green-thing on my hand and offering a darker looking one on hers, “Mine’s non-fat…” her smile was very reserved, more like, she’s shy to have been asking me this.
“Oh…” I was trying to analyze the scenario, but I twisted my frappe to reveal my name on it. “But my name’s on it…” I uttered then I regretted I did. I sounded rude.
To my surprise, that Ruu-chan/Kichida girl chuckled, “Rio, you guys have the same family name.”
I shot her a look and this girl in front of me, apparently her name’s Rio, was smiling as if she’s trying not to laugh too much. “Well, that’s a coincidence…” she laughed as Yuto and Kichida-san did.
I was just frozen there. Never really thought I’d say this, but maybe I can just watch her laugh all day. Again, with Yuto smacking me back to reality, “…Oh…Sorry…” I uttered and she laughed again.
“It’s not like our family name’s not that common…”she said, handing me my frappe as I just handed her hers. “Thanks…” She uttered and I just nodded. “Nice to meet you Yamada-san…”
“Nice to meet you too…” I answered barely, and she even shook my hand.
I watched as the girls walked away, with Yuto just nudging me, “Kichida-san said her friend was just here for a visit and that she just moved here in Yokohoma last month.” He looks like he’s putting together new info he’s just got, “Kichida-san’s from Canada, and her friend’s from England.” He took a sip from his frappe, “No wonder they look like they barely know us…”
“..Sou…” I uttered, patching up my new info. I took a sip from that frappe and was surprised at how different it tastes like now. “You’re right. This thing is not so bad afterall…”
Yuto smiled - he seemed really proud that I liked his suggestion. Then it hit me as Yuto said, “…Apparently, Rio-chan likes the non-fat one. I should try it once…” Yuto stopped talking, and we knew we were thinking of the same thing.
---
“Here he is… Yamada Ryosuke of Hey! Say! JUMP.” Ruu-chan spoke, showing Rio her phone and that image of Yamada Ryosuke. “I knew I’ve seen him somewhere.” She then clicked on a group photo, “And here’s Nakajima-kun…” she uttered. “Well what do you know… they are pretty big in the idol-industry.”
Rio took a sip from her frappe, nodding, “Johnny’s entertainment…” she uttered, “That sounds familiar too.”
Ruu just shrugged, “Oh well. Guess we’ll never see them again.” She looked at her friend and blinked, “Ah!”
They two of them stopped walking and Rio was looking rather worried at her friend, “What’s up?” She asked.
“Indirect kiss!” She uttered, with a grin on her face.
“W..what?” Rio looked at her now confused.
Ruu-chan was laughing, “Yamada Ryosuke just used that straw, didn’t he?”
As if it hit Rio. “…EEEEHH…???”
--
Yuto was patting my back, “Let’s hope she doesn’t know… ever…” he said, as Chii arrived and we hurried to our next meeting place with the rest of the gang.
“What’s wrong with Yama-chan?” Chinen uttered, looking at me curious.
“Nothing.” Yuto had a grin on his face, “He’s just shocked to have kissed someone.”
“KISS!?” Chinen sounded very much excited, and I know the roll of teases I’ll get from everyone.
“It’s not like that!” With that, Yuto and Chii just ran off, teasing me as I tried chasing them. We’re like kids sometimes, you see. But as we’ve settled down, I can only recall one thing… as I sit here on the train; I remember her brown eyes and that smile. Yep. It’d be nice if I get to see Yamada Rio-san again.
