I just returned from packaging up my cello for Vienna. It is now buried within a soft case, shrouded in endless layers of bubble wrap and mattress foam, and enclosed in a huge wooden crate. And yet... I still don't feel like it's safe enough.
Getting mailed across an ocean? Might get lost? Might get stolen? Might get broken? Might get smashed into a thousand itty bitty bite-sized pieces and then sink to the bottom of the Atlantic?
All cost and monetary worth aside... losing my cello would be like losing a beloved child. I couldn't just GET ANOTHER ONE. Pah. I've been playing on this same cello for about eight years now... we have become one.
I swear, it felt like I was saying goodbye when I closed the lid of that crate.
