"I love you" - Here's to a perfect couple

May 25, 2011 11:35

Has there ever been a more perfect pairing on television than Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson?

I think not.

Obviously, I'm going to talk about that scene. I could probably talk about the "For Good" scene if I really felt the need but it can be summed up pretty much with two words - I cried.

Of course, I cried in the coffeeshop, too. Cried. Sobbed. Bounced up and down in my seat. Cried a few more times. And hit reblog probably a hundred times just so I could see this face:

Can someone please give Darren Criss an award for most earnest and honest expression of love with just the use of his eyes??? How does he do that? I've never seen that. We've all discussed in fandom the various times he's looked at Kurt with love in his eyes and just... YES. Because now we get the confirmation with the look.

(I wouldn't want to date Darren Criss. Because if we'd been together for a while and he didn't look at me the way I saw Blaine looking at Kurt week after week? I'd be all 'WTF dude?!?!')

I have to be honest - I didn't think them saying "I love you" to one another would affect me like this. And I don't know if it's because we've all written it in fic over the last seven months (can you believe it's been seven months since Klaine first entered our lives??) or because of the fact that they've kind of said it without saying it for so very long. But it affected me in a big, big way, and no small amount of that reason I think is because of how Brad Falchuk wrote it. Just when I think RIB are letting me down when it comes to this pairing, one of them has to go and show me that, well, no, they damn well know this pairing just as well as fandom claims to.

I've built the idea of them saying "I love you" into some hugely romantic moment quite a few times because, honestly? That's what I'm used to 'Glee' giving us when it comes to their couples. Take last night for an example - Finn and Rachel getting back together took a highly inappropriate kiss onstage in front of thousands of people and costing them to not place at Nationals. It's kind of what one comes to expect from this show.

Or the kind of tossed away moment this season when Tina during her - once again cut off solo - declared her love for Mike while sobbing uncontrollably. It was meant to be a moment of humor, and then moving on.

So if we were ever to get a declaration of love between Kurt and Blaine, I simply hadn't been expecting it to be so them. So Blaine with his inability to not simply say what he's thinking and constantly wearing his heart right there on his sleeve (and oh, Blainers, you out of the two of you are the one who could be hurt the most someday). So Kurt and his surprise and pleasure and shining eyes with unshed tears because holy hell the boy of his dreams just told him he loved him.

I swear the barely two minutes we got of these two last night was a character study for each on the entire season.

Did you see what Blaine was wearing?? My eyes about popped out of my head the moment we were given just this shot:

Bright red. (Red is the most perfect color for Darren Criss in the entire world.) Bright red. Not the dark red from BIOTA. Not the black from PQ. This is a boy who has wanted to blend in - between his uniform at Dalton, in which he has always seemed most comfortable (hell, he got into GQ's best dressed because of how he carried himself in that thing), to the "simple" tux he wanted for prom. Unless he's up there performing (where he honestly seems to know he can charm the fricken pants off anyone), he just wants to be one of the group, "part of the team". And now? After learning courage from his boyfriend and walking out there in front of a gym of students he didn't even know to ask his boyfriend to slow dance with him, Blaine is wearing fire engine red out in public. With a brilliantly red plaid shirt underneath. KLDJKFJADLJKALSJKLJ;LD;JDFLASDJF;DASJDF It's like his declaration "Look at me! I'm Blaine Fucking Anderson and I'm totally and completely head over heels for my boyfriend!!"

Can I please see the ideas for his wardrobe next year?? He'll be in bright pink before long. (Oh yeah... those tour pants...)

So it's kind of not shocking that the boy who threw around words like "fit in" and "part of the team" and was afraid to go to prom because he'd been gay bashed, was now sitting in the middle of a coffeeshop in Ohio in his brilliant look-at-me red cardigan (Blaine + cardigans = OTP) and just saying "I love you" to his boyfriend out of nowhere.

And all of the above? Is because of having Kurt in his life. dkjf;adkjlajfsakjljfljksdf Character growth for the motherfucking win!

But oh wait, if we want to talk about character growth, then we need to talk about one Kurt Hummel. Has anyone watched 'Duets' recently? I think I cry harder rewatching that ep than I did when it first aired because I find myself shouting at the screen "Don't be sad, bb!! Just wait two more weeks and you're going to find that boy who holds your hand in the hallway and slow dances with you at prom, oh and now says I love you!!!" sjk;fkdjfkjasdjflsjfd

At the beginning of this season, Kurt Hummel was at the lowest point of his life. Even to the point that Schuester noticed things were going on - and we all know it takes a two-by-four to the head for that. Kurt was lonely beyond reason, he was unhappy, he never smiled, he got angry easily, he cried constantly, he was being bullied, had his life threatened, almost lost his father, was being told by his ex-crush that he was pretty much toxic to other guys. Even his best friend didn't seem to notice or care about what was happening to him. Kurt Hummel was alone, and had he not Blaine, had that chance meeting on the staircase never occurred, I can't help but think he would have ended up a statistic.

But now, even he says, "You know, when you stop and think about it, Kurt Hummel has had a pretty good year."

Now, reread the paragraph above. Yet, Kurt Hummel has had a pretty good year.

Because of Blaine Anderson. Blaine Anderson makes Kurt look like this:

And anyone who says that Blaine isn't a good boyfriend, that he's abusive (I'm still not getting this), that Kurt deserves better and all the rest of the bullshit out there??

Isn't a Kurt Hummel fan, either.

Because if you don't see how much Kurt has changed, how happy he is all the time now, how winning and being noticed for his talent used to be all he had, and now he has Blaine and love and someone there to be with him and support him and understand him and he doesn't need those other things when he knows, he absolutely knows from experience that his dreams can and do come true, then you honestly haven't paid attention to Kurt as a character at all.

But let's just talk about the simplicity of the moment, which on the surface could seem a bit off-the-cuff and insincere by those outside the Klaine spectrum. Blaine is just sitting there, gazing at this boy who he has clearly been in love with probably from the moment on the staircase (that look he gives Kurt says it all), but finally realized it during 'Blackbird'. This moment:

That's love.

And then again here:

So this look here:

Really isn't that difficult to misinterpret. And Blaine probably imagined taking Kurt on a picnic or declaring his love on stage while performing at Six Flags, but instead he's sitting there, listening to Kurt's excitement over New York. Being surprised by the fact that Kurt doesn't care that they lost Nationals (a very different Kurt from the one who couldn't get over the Regionals loss). And just... being moved by his boyfriend, yet again. So he just says what he's feeling and thinking, and goes back to gazing at Kurt.

And the really important thing here is how clear it is, he doesn't care if Kurt says it in return. That's not why he said it. It's kind of like breaking out in to song, which he once admitted was his way of expressing his feelings, only now he doesn't need to do that anymore - he just says what he's feeling because he knows Kurt gets it, and it's simple. He says it because he just has to in that moment - it's bursting out of him. And now that he's said it, he can go back to gazing in wonder at this beautiful, amazing boy who is all his.

And across from him is Kurt, who wasn't expecting this. Who probably somewhere along the way gave up on ever hearing such words but that's okay because he has Blaine, and they're happy, and he's been to New York, and dreams keep coming true so maybe some day Blaine might return those feelings Kurt has had, and kept to himself, since December. Kurt has been shot down so many times, has been told his feelings for other boys aren't right, that they make people uncomfortable - he was never going to be the one to say it first. His heart has been trampled on so much that he's just happy to have what he's been given.

So hearing that, from Blaine, at that moment, out of nowhere, without a grand declaration but so simple and heartfelt and absolutely real... He's breathless. He's in shock. He's near tears and trying to keep it all in, and when he says "I love you too" it's such a moment of "Of course I do - I have for so long. You know that right?" and Blaine just... smiles, almost with this little shrug of "Yeah, I know", and goes back to staring.

As much as I would have loved to have seen more, it just wasn't necessary. Mercedes and Sam show up (I think they will be my second fave couple if RIB play it right), and after they leave, Blaine and Kurt just slide right back into being Blaine and Kurt with Blaine laying out his choices for his audition piece. (I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THEY WERE!! LOL)

The thing this episode proved to me is that, no matter how much I want to see Blaine and Kurt on my screen all the time (not the least because they are two of the prettiest boys in the history of history) is that they are being so well-written, it's not necessary. Case in point: we got handed endgame last night even without the declaration of love. It was just a line, but said so much about this relationship: When Rachel says she is coming to NY for college, Kurt says "I am so coming too. I talked to Blaine and he is on board as well."

They've already had the college discussion! They are discussing the future together! (Oh 'Glee', these are the moments I would LOVE to see!) The thing important thing is Kurt doesn't have to choose between love and his dreams because Blaine is right there beside him, supporting his dreams and going with him, and oh my god you guys, these two are so perfect for each other, I regularly want to burst into tears just thinking about them.

For all that RIB have failed miserably at writing certain characters this year (Finn, Quinn), there is such thought and perfection put into this relationship between Kurt and Blaine, it blows my mind.

And we still have another season of Klaine to get through!!

(This is ignoring that little bug that has now been put into the mind of every Klaine fan who wants to see a spin-off of Rachel, Kurt and Blaine in NYC... a new kind of "Will and Grace" in college. dkjafkjkadfklflakjdk;fadj;kjdfkl)

I just

In approximately two hours total time this season (and now I need a Klaine movie), this amazing couple has been developed and given to us. They started out as friends, best friends and now soulmates, because there's no other word for it. They've helped one another to grow, given each what the other so needed (Blaine has given Kurt the love and support he thought was missing from his life, Kurt has given Blaine the strength and bravery missing from his), and are now free to just be amazing and fabulous and make their dreams come true, side by side.

*SOBBING*

And a brief moment to throw love at how married they are. This moment:

When Kurt is talking about his musical about Pippa because he is so obsessed with the Royal family, and Blaine is just like "My boyfriend. I love him but he's insane. Ignore him." So adorable because you know Kurt gives him the same looks. LOVE.

There are lots of questions regarding the transfer now, mainly because the coffeeshop scene left some a bit confused. I just rewatched it, and I think it clearly indicates this is more than likely either Friday afternoon or Saturday. With Blaine out of uniform, I'm prepared to say it's Saturday. He says he and Kurt are about to go get sheet music, and his audition is the following day for Six Flags (LOL Meta. Darren touring Six Flags this summer. It is so wrong that I decided Blaine in the RP I'm in would be performing in a summer show at a theme park...). Plus, Mercedes simply says "See you in class", which can easily just be directed at Kurt for Monday.

I'm glad there is no indication of a transfer because I think a little more attention would need to be directed to it. There needs to obviously be a reason from Blaine (facing his bullies, whatever), and the excitement from Kurt. I am hoping for a replay of their first meeting with a simple "Excuse me, I'm new here" from Blaine. And I plan on making a full post regarding transfer versus non-transfer later as I can spend time working it out in my head because right now I am so torn.

Before I close this post because I am starving and flights being delayed suck, can we take a moment to appreciate SassyGay!Blaine???

All the awards in the world for you, Darren Criss, when you decide to throw in your gay mannerisms. Good god, I love you.
