Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators
This game is seriously awesome. It's cheesy sounding, and well, a bunch of the dialog is cheesy too, but that kind of adds to the charm. This is a non-linear turn-based space exploration/combat/trading game. Think tradewinds in space, or some such.
Anyway it can be pretty frustrating your first time through, it's fairly common (among the people I know who played it) to end up being really money strapped where you can't really progress any more in the game because your maintenance on your equipment costs too much. I really liked the game, and wanted to get back into it, so I ended up looking around online and finding a FAQ of sorts that gave me some hints and got me going in the right direction. Actually much less information than I was expecting from an internet FAQ on a game that has been out for several months now, but it was good. Too much information ruins the fun too, it was a pretty perfect balance.
Anyway, I got back into it, learned to time my equipment upgrades better, and learned to use the galaxy around me to greater effect. So I ended up beating it earlier this week. This game will definitely be on my short list of games I go back and play every couple years. It's good because it's exactly the type of game that ends up in this category for me. It's fun of course, but it can also be beaten by someone who knows what they are doing in just a day or two of hardcore playing.
Another game that got added to that list semi-recently is Sid Meier's Pirates. I really liked that game, silly finger DDR ballroom dancing and all. And once I had beaten it once, I could play through from beginning to end in about a day of hardcore playing.
