Challenge #133 - If
If her father had never virtualized her and himself onto Lyoko, if he had never even created Lyoko and XANA, Aelita sometimes wondered what their lives would be like now.
Aelita knew, for starters, that her physical age would match her mental and chronological age. She would look like she was in her early to mid twenties, just like she was supposed to. Not that Aelita had any inkling of just what that might look like, exactly. It would mean that she was taller, or course, but what else? Would her hair be longer or would she still keep it short? Would her clothing tastes be the same? Would she resemble her late mother, as her father had said she was growing up to do on so many occasions?
And what would she be doing with her life? She supposed she would still be living with her father in the Hermitage, although part of her dreamt of a small flat all her own in the city somewhere. She would hang out with the old friends she had had way back when, friends that now most likely believed Aelita to be dead. But what kind of career would she have? Long ago, Aelita used to dream of teaching music, possibly at Kadic. Would she be doing that now if she were an adult?
Franz Hopper would still be teaching at Kadic; Yumi, Ulrich, Odd and Jeremie would be his students. Aelita could picture Jeremie and her father getting along very well. She could see him coming over to the Hermitage for dinner, then afterwards debating various subjects with Franz - computers, most likely.
And the two of them, Aelita and Jeremie, might still be friends but it would be a different kind of friendship. They'd get along very well, sure, but they wouldn't have the same feelings for each other that they did now. Well, Aelita knew she wouldn't, but she could see Jeremie developing something of a crush on his professor's twenty-something daughter. Not that anything would come of it, though.
Nothing could come of it.
As for Yumi, Ulrich and Odd...she would know them only in passing, names that her father might bring up in conversation about work from time to time. Odd's would probably be the most mentioned because of the boy's study habits. And they probably wouldn't know her at all.
They would live out their lives in perfect normalcy. Yumi and Ulrich might or might not get together. Yumi might eventually have to leave school because of her father's work or her parents' relationship difficulties. Ulrich might wind up as Sissi's boyfriend somewhere down the road. Odd might end up flunking out of school, or else be expelled because Jim or one of the other teachers happened upon Kiwi. Because there would be no "return to the past" program to go back and erase little mistakes along with XANA's damage.
Because there would be no XANA, no Lyoko.
