Title: Ghosts
Pairings: MinKey, OnTae, (friendly) JongKey
Description: Where Minho and Jonghyun are ghosts, and Key’s younger vampire brother Taemin is in love with his best friend Onew.
Key grew up knowing the supernatural, which was expected, since his family had a history of vampires to druids. He’d never known his father, and his mother had died just last year, to the despair of his relatives who didn’t want the trouble of two teenage kids lumped on them. He wasn’t particularly sad about his mother’s passing, since he suspected that she’d be back, probably in another form of some kind. Life just went on for him, except that he now had some choices to make.
Once the funeral was settled and all the weeping aunts had been dispatched back to their various caves and hiding places, Key declared that they were moving to the city, bringing about his younger brother’s whines and threats. Taemin had milky pale skin that was the envy of girls and guys alike, black eyes that twinkled like star sapphires, and plush pink lips that were right now permanently pulled into a pout. Of course, behind that flawless adorable exterior hid a hunter who could snap an oak in half, run faster than the speed of light, and had retractable canines.
Yup, his delightful, loveable little brother who effortlessly charmed the entire female population in their little town was a vampire. Their mother had chosen that path for him, since it had been a while since there had been a vampire in the family, and she always insisted Key was destined for bigger things. Well, other than having a ghost for a best friend, Key didn’t really see how that worked out.
A few common misconceptions about vampires that people had, like that they were eternally trapped in the age that they were ‘created’, were completely and utterly fake. If that was true, then Taemin would be eternally a new-born baby. Of course he grew, at least until his puberty ended, after which it depended on how much blood he’d had to drink up to that time. In the meantime, to Key’s annoyance, he continued to eat everything in sight while keeping up that slender frame, something that Key absolutely despised him for. And yeah, vampires did eat normal food, while only drinking blood when necessary about once a month. Blood - animal or human - just made them stronger and faster than they already were, and was something Taemin never really saw the need for.
So of course, when Taemin jumped to his feet growling and baring his fangs at his elder brother, Key just continued twirling his pasta and talking to his best friend, Jonghyun. Who also happened to be a ghost.
“Look at him Jjonggie, pretending he’s about to leap over here and rip my throat out. After I cooked his favourite cream pasta for dinner too! Kids were never this disrespectful in your time right?” Jonghyun nodded while tutting at Taemin. Jonghyun had been born 80 years ago, and died at the age of 20 when he’d accidentally shot himself in the heart while learning how to load a gun.
“80 years ago, the lad would’ve been whipped into obedience at a tender age!”
“Orghtkooathignetorghasdha.” Taemin exclaimed as he flopped back into his chair.
“Don’t talk with your fangs out.” Key pointed his fork at the boy, who rolled his eyes before speaking again.
“Oh shut up you floating bit of plasma. And there’s no way I’m moving to the city!”
“Why, scared you’ll lose your popularity?” Jonghyun laughed as he floated down the middle of their dining table with his arms folded, just to show that he could, hence earning him a glare from Key.
“No, I don’t want to be stalked by screaming crowds of girls again.” Taemin grinned as he ran his fingers through his soft blonde hair.
“Shut up and eat, we’re moving in three days.” Key settled the matter with that and ignored Taemin’s cries of protest.
Two nights later, Taemin was curled up on the bottom bunk contentedly snoring away, after being forced to finally pack all his stuff that day under threats of having them all thrown away by Key. (Vampires can sleep if they want to, but most choose not to, since they actually use energy to stay asleep.) Key was lying with his arms folded under his head, staring at the collage he’d stuck to his ceiling. Other than the picture of Taemin and him with their mother, the rest appeared to anyone else to be pictures of him alone, but only he could see Jonghyun posing crazily beside him.
Jonghyun floated through the ceiling to lie next to Key, and the best friends lay in companionable silence for some time, until Key’s breathing fell into a regular calm pattern. Propping his head on his arm to stare at the other boy, Jonghyun gently traced the outline of Key’s delicate eyelashes, his well defined cheekbones and his delectable lips…until Key suddenly spoke
“I can feel you staring, Jonghyun. What is it?” the boy said softly without opening his eyes.
“You’re moving. That’s it.” Jonghyun sighed and floated up to hover about the bed.
“I know. And?” Key knew what the other was driving at, but he didn’t want to admit it. Leaving this house would mean leaving Jonghyun behind, because this town was where Jonghyun died, and he couldn’t leave it without crossing over. However, if he crossed over he would be able to follow the family, but Key wouldn’t be able to see him anymore.
“And, that’s it.” Jonghyun repeated again.
“I’m sorry Jonghyun, but I have to go. You’re my best friend, my only friend for that, surely you understand what I’m thinking.” That this place cramps your style, that you can’t ever get the attention you deserve in this little town, that Taemin isn’t growing up properly with a population of 50…the list just goes on doesn’t it? Jonghyun thought bitterly. He loved the boy, the only companion he’d had in 80 years, who he was about to lose, again.
“I know it’s not fair to you, but I’ll come visit, I promise. And I’m sure you’ll find something to occupy yourself. You could move in next door, spend more time scaring that stupid cat…” Key drifted off as he felt Jonghyun fade out of the room.
I also promised I’d never leave, didn’t I?
The next morning, Key dumped a sleeping Taemin into the back seat of the car along with their backpacks, gave the new address to the moving truck and had just locked the front door when Jonghyun materialized next to him. Key ignored him and turned to walk off the front porch when he felt two ghostly hands slide through him, something Jonghyun knew he hated. He was about to turn around and tell the ghost off, when he realized Jonghyun’s arms were ‘wrapped’ around his waist.
“Kim Jonghyun, are you…hugging me?” Key turned around with an incredulous look on his face. Jonghyun had never ever been intimate with him; it just wasn’t in the soul’s soul (literally) to hug guys.
“I’ll never ever ever get to, or want to, do this again so shut up.” The ghost mumbled. Key sighed and rolled his eyes.
“For a masochist, you sure are a wimp. I love you Kim Jonghyun. Will you let me leave now?” Jonghyun blushed, if that was even possible, and disappeared again. With a grin, Key sauntered down to the car and told the driver to start off without a backward glance. At the edge of town, he heard a whisper in his ear.
“I love you too Kim KiBum.”
Five hours of continuous driving later, Taemin finally woke up, and declared with bleary eyes that he was thirsty. This meant a detour into the nearest forest and a waste of another hour, but when Taemin came back with his face glowing and mood up, Key willingly let himself forget their schedule and painfully endured the stupid jokes the boy cracked.
“What did the teacher say to Dracula after he failed his math test? …Can't you count Dracula?” Taemin cackled as he lay in Key’s lap, the elder rolling his eyes. Frowning at the lack of response, Taemin continued. “How do you join the Dracula fan club? …Send your name, address and blood group!” this had the boy giggling in fits again while Key contemplated the effect of trying to kill a vampire in a moving car.
The two boys finally arrived at the doorstep of their new flat on the 21st floor at the stroke of midnight, only to be greeted with the mountain of boxes that the movers had very unceremoniously dumped in a pile that completely blocked the front door. Taemin lithely managed to scale the heap and slide into the miniscule crack between the wall of boxes and the door, unlocking the door and dashing into the house to claim his room, and leaving a cranky Key pacing outside.
Taemin made fast work of carrying the boxes in, thanks to the feed he’d had earlier and Key finally managed to stumble through the door with his eyes half closed at 1AM. Unfortunately for him, Taemin was literally bouncing off the walls while he felt like he would be right at home with some of their zombie cousins. The elder boy made the hyperactive vampire stay in his room with threats of refusing to cook anything for the next week, and flopped onto his bed with an arm flung over his eyes, drifting into slumber within seconds.
Key awoke from a nightmare of drowning to being doused in rainwater from the window next to his bed that he’d forgotten to close the night before. Struggling through the tangle of bed sheets he’d hastily flung across the bare mattress, Key managed to force the window shut just as a crash of thunder and lightning illuminated his room.
The boy whipped around in shock, clutching the sheets to his chest, eyes scanning the dark room. He could have sworn that he saw a figure in the corner… for a moment Key’s heart was racing, and then he remembered the family that he had. Rolling his eyes and laughing at his own ridiculousness, he lay back down and snuggled into his covers. What’s there to be scared of when there’s a crazy vampire in the next room?
