Title: Ghosts
Pairings: OnTae, MinKey, friendly!JongKey
Description: Where Minho and Jonghyun are ghosts, and Key’s younger vampire brother Taemin is in love with his best friend Onew.
At Key’s exasperating response, Minho simply threw his hands up in the air and turned away, gripping the sides of his head like he trying to hold it together. Key just kept turning from one ghost to another, as if watching a tennis match, eyes blinking in confusion. Finally, Jjong begrudgingly spoke up.
“Wandering spirits are usually…attached to a soul-mate, another spirit who is still, well, alive. Normal ghosts don’t need a soul-mate, since we’re technically already at peace, we just stick around because we want to.”
“But how do the two of you know each other?” Key was incredibly intrigued by this all, finally realizing how ignorant he’d been about the world of ghosts his whole life. Both the ghosts shrugged, glancing at each other.
“We just…do. Well, I mean, I can tell that Minho’s your soul-mate. He glows, when you’re around, literally. And I guess to him, I’m another ghost?” Minho nodded silently. Then, there was a huge crash from the living room.
Key spun on his heels and dashed out the door, thudding down the stairs and even leaping over the banister in his rush to get to his younger brother. He flew into the living room with his eyes wide and frenzied, mouth wide open with Taemin’s name on his lips. But the moment he took in the scene before him, his arms flopped to his sides and his mouth pulled to the side in an annoyed pout.
Before him was a tangle of vampires and Onew, with the High Mage standing to the side with an incredulous expression on his face. Onew was seemingly trapped between three pale forms, who were impossibly wrapped around each other with limbs sticking out in all directions. Rolling his eyes, Key strode over and grabbed Taemin and the Investigator’s collars tight.
“Alright, let go, now.” His voice was chilly and harsh, not hiding the underlying threat of being physically yanked apart if they chose not to comply. Instantly, fingers were splayed open and tangled legs relaxed, and the four fell apart.
Taemin crossed his legs before him, rubbing the back of his neck as he peered sheepishly up at Key, lips instinctively pulling into a pout. Onew was sprawled on the floor, panting hard, gripping onto the couch for dear life. The Protector and Investigator just stood up coolly and brushed off their pants, being the chic vampires they were. Key just rolled his eyes and playfully shoved the Investigator’s shoulder.
“Jeez Mir, can’t you ever keep away from humans that don’t belong to you? As delicious as he is, Onew is Taemin’s.” Mir just flicked his hair out of his eyes and grinned at Key, his eyes crinkling into thin lines.
“Sorry, got infected by all the brain waves coming from Joon earlier. I don’t know what’s up with that guy; he’s just oozing with infatuation vibes, first it was towards Doongie here, then now Onew.”
At that revelation, instant protests were put forward from both the Protector and High Mage, the former stuttering and tripping over his words while the latter had flushed a bright pink all the way to the tips of his ears. It wasn’t until Mir strode over and cupped Joon’s face in his hands, crushing their lips together, did the Protector finally shut up. Onew continued watching this spectacular show from the floor, jaw hanging wide open in bewilderment.
Taemin laughed softly and reached over to push his jaw shut, before silently leading him towards the bedroom, leaving the elder kids to play by themselves. However, as they approached the closed door, they heard raised voices from within. Taemin halted and knelt down, pressing a finger to his lips, and Onew nodded.
“I see you’re still fixed on being a selfish bastard.” Jonghyun’s voice was hard, and Taemin could almost imagine his clenched jaw, almost - since he’d never actually seen the ghost.
“He’s my soul-mate, so who’s the one being selfish here?! At least my reasons for it are just.” Onew frowned at this unknown voice, but a look of realization swept across Taemin’s face, having recognised it from Key’s room in the new apartment once or twice. As the duo swivelled their ears back to the conversation, they heard Jonghyun scoff.
“Just?? There is no ‘just’ reason for this. We both want his soul for our own selfish reasons, so don’t try to act like you have a right to it.” The two boys stared at each other in horror outside the door. Key’s soul?! Taemin could almost hear the smirk of the other ghost.
“True. I just want to find out about my death and become a normal spirit, while you just want to be reincarnated. I’m just saying I’m the lesser of two evils.” The ghosts laughed, sharing a chilling joke that sent shivers of terror down the humans’ spines. Wide-eyed in dread, the boys turned and padded noiselessly back downstairs, hands still tightly clasped together.
