That's usually the pattern I fall into, I've noticed. To briefly mention what's been going on since the last entry, I flew home last Saturday and as of right now I'm going to stay home for the summer. I'll only be returning to Chicago if I happen to get an internship, but it's not looking likely that I'll find anything for the summer. I'm sending out some stuff tonight, just in case, and if nothing comes up, then I already have a head start for the fall. Also, my sister is graduating this week, so this coming weekend we're having her graduation party at our house, and it's been nothing but major DIY renovation and cleaning. I'd like to think Karl Pilkington would be pleased.
Okaay, so between the last paragraph and this one, I went out to a barbeque and had a bit to drink, so apologies if I do any tipsy typing. Here we go!
First, name your top 12 bands. (Taken from my Last.fm)
1) Metallica
2) Opeth
3) Dethklok
4) Amon Amarth
5) OOMPH!
6) Rammstein
7) Alice In Chains
8) Mastodon
9) Eluveitie
10) Apocalyptica
11) Slayer
12) Rush
Ok, now answer some questions about band number one: (Metallica)
How did you hear about this band?
Wellll, it's kind of hard to say, because they were one of the bands my dad listened to when I was growing up, so I was never really formally introduced to them, I just sorta listened to them whenever my dad had them playing in the car or in the house. It wasn't until I was about 14/15 that I started really exploring and listening to them on my own time.
How long have you been listening to them?
Again, I could say from the time I was a child, which would be about 15 or 16 years. But if we're going by when I decided to treat them as my "own" band rather than "the band my dad listens to that I kinda like too", then I would say 6 years.
Name one band member.
James Hetfield. <3
Does this band have a hot lead singer?
Haha well I guess it depends. I would say probably by conventional standards he's not considered "hot" (and the dude is also like 50 now), but he has physical qualities that I find really attractive, like his sharp blue eyes and his laugh/smile.
How long have they been around?
1981. Their first album came out in 1983.
Is this your favorite band?
Yes! Forever my favorite of all time. :D
On to band numero DEUX! (Opeth)
Write some random lyrics by this band.
And I can see you running through the fields of sorrow.
Are they all girls? Or all guys? Or a mix?
All men.
Can you name each member of this band?
Erm, no. Only the lead singer. I'm really bad about that, and I've been meaning to make an effort to really learn about the members of the bands I listen to. :p
What was the first song you heard from them?
Uhm, I'm going to go with Heir Apparent? My friend Jason played it for me on a road trip when we went to see visit his cousin, because we were seeing Opeth a couple weeks later. This was in 2008. And some time after that I downloaded Blackwater Park from Kayla's albums list and have been pretty much obsessed since.
How many guitar players does this band have?
They've gone through several band changes over the years, but I think they've always had at least three.
What kind of music do they play?
Progressive death metal.
Band #3. HUZZAH!! (Dethklok)
Do any of your friends like this band?
Sure do! Pretty much anyone who likes the show Metalocalypse if a fan of Dethklok, and that's the case here.
Is this band mainstream?
Not commercially, but in the metal community, yeah they're pretty well known. They're the only band to have a death metal album place at #1 on the Billboard Chart.
How many CDs of theirs do you have?
All their CDs (and the physical ones, too). They only have two out right now, but a third is being worked on right now.
Have you ever seen them live?
Yes! I saw them in 2009 for the first time, and it was one of the most fun shows I'd ever been to. They're touring again this year with Lamb of God and Gojira, and I'm dying to go, but they're playing in Chicago when I'm home and in Pennsylvania when I go back to school, so I have yet to figure out if I can see them again. Ugh. :(
Are they still together?
OF COURSE THEY ARE THEY HAVE TO STOP THE TRIBUNAL AND BRING PEACE AND METAL THROUGHOUT THE LAND (but seriously, considering they're a fictional animated band, they're still together. The real people behind the cartoon characters (Brendon Small, Bryan Beller, Mike Keneally, and Gene Hoglan) all have their own separate projects that they work on, but they come together whenever there is a new tour/album.)
Onward to band #4. (Amon Amarth)
Do you have any merchandise from this band?
Yes, but not that much. Maybe two shirts? There's this "Viking Bitch" tank-top they have that I have been wanting to buy for years, but never had the time/money to actually get it, lol.
Write some random lyrics by them.
A predator's heart knows no remorse. It lives for the hunt, a ntural force.
How many full-length albums have they put out?
Eight.
Why do you like this band?
Some of my other friends could probably say it better than I can, but I just think they write really beautiful melodies that really go outside their "death metal" genre. It's really hard to get some people interested in that type of music, but I think Amon Amarth is so special and different that they make an excellent gateway band and can help listeners experience the more melodic side of that extreme music, which can then help them to branch out and discover other bands of the same nature. That was the case with me, anyway, and I'll always be thankful for that.
Are they an older or more modern band?
It wasn't until I got a hold of their whole discography that I realized how long they'd been around for (since the 80s), but they've been recognized and well received and appreciated in recent years, and they're still making music.
Have they ever written a song you hate?
Nope. There are definitely songs that I prefer over others, but not one that I actually HATE to the point that I can't stand listening to it.
Numbah FIVE (OOMPH!)
What's your favorite album of theirs?
Hmmm. Well, I only have three of their albums (I don't know if they have any more) but I'm probably going to go with Wahrheit oder Pflicht. It still retains some of the fun, poppy hooks that were on Ego, but you can tell that they really matured on this album, and I love how they sing in their native language on this album, rather than switching between German and English. It just makes it seem like a much more concise and put-together package.
What was the first song you heard from them?
Oh, tough. It feels it's been foreverrrr, I don't think I remember. Hmmm...I'm gonna go with Bitter or Supernova. Those are the two ealriest songs I remember listening to.
Do they have a logo?
No? I don't think so?
Name two members.
Dero Goi and Andreas Crap (thanks Wikipedia :p)
Write some random lyrics by them.
Nimm den ring von finger denn ich will den ring zuruck (Take the ring from the finger because I want the ring back).
Band number SIX. (Rammstein)
How many albums of theirs do you own?
All of them (but Sehnsucht is the only physical copy I own).
Is this band well-known?
Yeah, I would say so. Again, just your average day listener probably hasn't heard of them, but they're well known in their respective genre. Actually, I saw them playing on Jimmy Kimmel one night, so maybe they have attracted some more casual listeners, lol.
How long have you been listening to them?
I started listening to them when I first heard Du Hast on Sirius, and that must have been right around the time I started high school - so about 14/15.
Do you like their band name?
Um, sure? Lol I actually couldn't get the pronunciation of their name right for the longest time. :p
Do you know anyone else who likes them?
Yes, that's how I really got into them and started getting their CDs, by hearing what my friends had to say about them (even if most said friends think they're pretentious douchebags now and want nothing to do with them).
Is the drummer hot?
I have no idea, lol. I only know Richard and Ollie and Till by name and face, and I never got into the physical aspect of them when I started listening to their music, so I don't really have an opinion either way.
Number 7. YAY! (Alice In Chains)
Have they kept the same lineup through their whole career?
Well, yes and no. They honestly had the same lineup through the beginning and high point of their career, but then the band broke up, and their lead singer died in 2004, and most recently their bass player was found dead in 2010. So, I would say that if they had decided to stick together and continue making music, it would be the same people, but due to unfortunate circumstances, they've had to bring in some new people.
Is there an aesthetic aspect to this band?
I would say so, since they were among the first crop of bands coming out when grunge was the big thing, and that genre has a clear and distinct type of look and style. It doesn't matter so much anymore nowadays, but back then it was a major factor, I think.
Do they have videos on Mtv?
Back when MTV was good and actually played music videos, they played a lot of their stuff. Since its gone down the toilet, I doubt they're playing videos of them anymore, but they're still making them and I'm sure you can find them somewhere on the airwaves, like Vh1 Classic (but I usually just find them on YouTube anyway :p).
Name a band member.
Jerry Cantrell. As much as I love Layne Staley (their deceased singer), I would argue that Jerry is truly the heart and soul of their band.
What kind of music do they play?
Well, they've always been labelled as a grunge band, but I think they definitely had a more mature, musical sound that set them apart from bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden. Layne had an incredibly unique voice that fit will with some of their more funky riffs, but they also utilized a lot of light acoustic type playing, which is some of my favorite aspects of their music.
Number 8. (Mastodon)
Why do you like this band?
Most of the bands I like are because they're unique or different in some way and they offer something that hasn't been found with other bands, and Mastodon is an example of thise. The vocal style is different, but really wonderful, and all their albums (except their more recent one) are all centered around concepts, and I absolutely love concept albums. They have a bit of a mystic, fantastic quality to them that really appeals to me and I think that's what attracts me to the stories they want to tell.
Are they better than, worse than, or equal to band #2 (Mastodon)?
Well, they're too different to compare like that. Opeth has some concept albums, but both bands exude such different vibes and emotions that it's not really fair to equate them like that. I love both bands a lot, but I feel something different when I'm listening to Mastodon's Crack The Skye over Opeth's Watershed.
When did they first form?
Around 2000.
How old were you when you first got into them?
I'd heard a few of their songs before, but I really got into them when I bought Crack The Skye, and that came out in 2009, so I've really only been listening to them for a few years. It seems a lot longer than that, though.
How many band members are there?
Four.
Do you own any of their merchandise?
Other than their CDs, no. :( I've been meaning to get one of their shirts though. Again, just never got around to it.
NINE (Eluveitie)
Are they closer to hard rock, or pop rock?
UM WELL THEY'RE FOLK METAL WHICH MEANS THEY HAVE HURDY-GURDYS AND FUCKING FLUTES so I kind of want to say neither? But considering they're in the metal genre, then I would say they're closer to hard rock.
Write some random lyrics.
Yet the glowing wick will not be quenched, the sown fire will never die.
How old is the lead singer?
According to the Wiki, he is 36.
Are they still together?
Yep! They just came out with a new album earlier this year, and it is wonderfuuuul.
Do they swear a lot?
No, I actually don't think they swear at all. If they do, it's either a) so rare that I don't notice, or b) in Gaulish so I can't actually understand what they're saying. :p
Do they write serious lyrics?
Being a folk metal band, their lyrics are mostly related around mythology and folklore and Celtic themes (think Game Of Thrones if it was converted to an audio format). But they write them in really poetic and lovely ways, and I think many of their songs hold deeper meanings to them.
Band NUMERO DIX (Apocalyptica)
When did they first form?
1993.
Was their latest album any good?
7th Symphony. Meh, I liked it, but I don't think it did that well among their fanbase. They've started writing more pop oriented songs backed up by popular vocalists (Corey Taylor and the guy from Shinedown, for example) and I don't think many people are into that. I don't hate it, and I liked some of the songs on their last album, but it basically felt like the leftovers of Worlds Collide, which was a similarly structured album that came before their most recent and I think it did the job a lot better than 7th Symphony.
How many members are there?
Four.
What's something distinctive about them?
LOL. Well. They're a cello group that started out covering Metallica/other heavy metal songs? That's pretty distinctive. They've obviously written original work and made a nitch for themselves, but they've always had their roots in metal and I love when classical musicians respect the talent that exists in the metal world, and vice versa.
Which of their CDs has the best artwork?
Reflections. It looks very artistic.
Number 11. You're getting closer to the end (Slayer (technically Korn was also tied in the 11th spot, but I felt like I might have more to say/knowledge about Slayer so I went with them))
Name some lyrics. (this is the last time, I swear.)
Now I have you deep inside my everlasting grasp. The seven bloody gates of Hell is where you'll live your last.
What was their best album?
To be honest, I haven't heard their entire discography. WHOOPS. But I'm going to go with the most obvious answer and say Reign In Blood because it's a classic and it's fun and brutal and it's just the ultimate Slayer album that everyone needs to hear at least once in their life (which shouldn't be too hard, it's only like 23 minutes long or something, lol).
Is the lead singer a guy or a chick?
A guy with a lion's mane of wild dark curls.
Do they have any videos on Mtv?
Again, not anymore, but back in the day they did, most likely on Headbanger's Ball.
What kind of music do they play?
Metal, specifically thrash metal, but their lyrics could also put them in the death metal category since they pretty much always sing about murder and Satanism and ritual sacrifices and the like. You know, standard metal fare.
How long have you liked this band?
I got into them around the same time I started listening to Metallica, although they never really clicked for me the way the latter did. So about 6 or 7 years.
Number 12! ALMOST FINISHED.... (Rush)
Why do you like this band?
UGH I HAVE NO WORDS. I know I've been throwing around the word "unique" for almost all my choices, but Rush seriously takes the cake. There's something about them that they do differently over everybody else, and you only have to hear the first couple notes of a song before you know it's a Rush song, their music is that distinct. They're like a Canadian Led Zeppelin, and it's just three guys, but it sounds like five more people are playing with them because their music is JUST THAT GOOD and it's so large and sonically vast. I love them so much. <3
Do they still have their original lineup?
Yes, the three wise men of prog rock (Technically, they started out with a different drummer, but he's like the Ron McGovney of Rush, so it doesn't really matter :p)
Is it likely you'll find their CDs and merchandise at the mall?
Haha, probably not. I mean, they have their own section wherever you buy CDs, like at Best Buy or Barnes & Noble. But like you'd have to actually seek them out, they're not commercial enough that they'll just be hanging out wherever you go.
How long have they been around?
1968! Over 40 years and they're still making fabulous music.
Are they lyrically talented?
Yeah totally! They have a very wide range of what they write about, and their lyrics really show how intelligent and intellectual they are. I feel my IQ going up just by listening to them. :D
