Well, it's been a while...I think.
Time's flying around me at the moment, and every time I think I've got a couple of days to catch up and do some of the stuff I really want to do (like read the 4 books I bought off eBay last week) Some damn fool relative decides we need ANOTHER family get together, and then they pester me about what I'm bringing and so on, and...*poof*...there goes my weekend!
Mothers day would have gone swimmingly if we'd stopped at just one mother. Between myself and Ian, we have 3. So I thought I'd be really good, and invite Ian's mum around for brunch, considering we haven't seen her for ages.
I knew I wouldn't have to see my mum, 'cause she's in Berri, I only saw her a week before, and I'd sent her a pressie in the mail, so that was sussed.
However, my auntie rang me to say that my dad's family was meeting for lunch, could we make it? it'd be lovely to see you all again, btw, can you make a salad to bring? urgh! So, knowing I could null every "we really must catch up some time" for an entire side of the family in one fell swoop, I decided we'd go. **rolls eyes** things are never that simple.
**goes into dreamy mode**
It all started when I'd arranged with an old friend to have dinner at her house on Saturday night. We hadn't seen them in ages, and let's juts say, a good time was had by all...although the drinking was left up to those that didn't have to drive, ie. everyone except me. Still, I had a good night. We got home around 1.30am and I crashed into bed without doing any of the preparations for brunch that I'd stupidly planned to do.
So I got up at 6.30, took the dog for a half hour run, got home and got straight into cleaning and sweeping and grumblin, because Ian (who'd certainly enjoyed the odd drink or 10) was still snoring his head off in bed. That done, I then got on to the food.
Gods am I glad I actually planned what we'd have, and had thought it through enough that I could make everything to the almost-finished stage before they got there, so I wouldn't be stuck in the kitchen, while they enjoyed the brunch.
So I started with the croissants (cheese, bacon, spinach and tomato) sitting on a tray, ready to get chucked in the oven. Then I made the cream-cheese, marmalade and honey stuffed french toast (up to the part where you dunk it and cook it), then the blackberry pancake mix (with the blackberries I had picked a few months ago and frozen). Finally I cut up the strawberries and bananas, chucked them in a bowl, whipped the cream, put the blackberry jam in a bowl on the table, set the table ....and everyone started turning up.
Of course, while all this is happening, his royal laziness has crawled out of bed, put the kettle on, dragged himself into the shower, made a coffee FOR HIMSELF on his way to that most obnoxious of habits, his morning smoke.
Needless to say, after a few deep breathes to calm myself down ,and remind myself that he had a hangover to be proud of, I told him he was doing the cooking of everything I had prepared and that he'd be doing the washing up. I was not doing a thing more.
After all that though, brunch went better than I could ever have expected. I'm stoked! I have found a meal I can do magnificently. I've tried many times, but something always fluffs up.
Then we cleaned up...oops, I mean Ian and his son cleaned up, while I had my shower (at last!) got dressed again and took ages blow-drying my hair, :)). well, I'd be buggered if I was doing anymore work. I had made the potato salad the night before, thankfully, so I grabbed that, and off we went for round 2.
ya de ya de ya da
I didn't get home until 6pm and had work the next day.
I HATE busy weekends, I really do!
So, now it's only 14 sleeps till I head off on my 24 day holiday around Broome and Darwin, and everywhere in between, with my Nanna. I can't wait, and now time is going SOOOO slowly. grrr. Still, I hope the next 2 weekends go slowly too, becasue I definately can't keep up this pace....it'd kill me.
