So I'm probably making this post far too late (then again, not everyone's weird like me and Ellie and does Xmas gifts months in advance), but I have a request for Christmas this year, if you'd been thinking of getting me anything, or even doing my now-standard tattoo fund. Please instead feed the new kitty for a computer, or rather, to help pay back what I'm going to be spending on a new desktop in the next week or so.
See, the World of Warcraft expansion came out on Thursday, and hey, I'm dumb and didn't check the system requirements (I'm not used to computer games! None of my consoles have this problem!), and my poor laptop is far from doing the job (1.33 GHz/PPC G4, while it wants at least 1.6 GHz/PPC G5). I can barely move through the new big city (which I'm testing right now, and it's way emptier than I've ever seen Shattrath, but I'm lagged much worse), and I'm getting slowdown while trying to work on quests, all of it. I mean, I'm used to being handicapped on this thing, keyboard turning and mouse-crippled, and with 10 fps on a good day, but this is awful.
So I'm going to get a desktop, because I'm not going to stop playing anytime soon, and if I can actually move in the world, maybe I can get more done away from the game, too. Or something like that. So if you were going to do any sort of gift for me, please tip a dollar or five or whatever into the hat (times are not awesome, and I know I'm stripping back my gifting this year); I really don't need any more stuff one bit, and any wee amount would make a difference for this.
While I have you, though...what should I be looking for in a system? As much as I would really, really like a Mac, even the lowest-cost option (a Mac Mini would suit for these purposes, though it's not stellar) is about double what a comparable PC (from what Soula said; I don't know much about PCs) would run, and I just don't have that kind of money. Anyone have any suggestions for a particular brand they like, or other advice for me? This laptop is the only computer I've ever bought, and it was easy in that Mac only has so many options, plus Jon knows all. I'm so clueless, I'm a bad gamer and sysadmin both.
