The alien glyphs were starting to blur together, so he pulled off his glasses and rubbed at his eyes. Hang in there, brain, he muttered inwardly. It's been a long night, I know, but we're almost done.
Pages and pages of translations lay strewn across his desk, threatening to leap off and run for the hills if he so much as sighed. Hours and hours of work that was finally coming to a close.
By the time Jack arrived the next morning, he found Daniel asleep with his head on the desk, his last sentence only halfway finished, stopping mid-word.

They'd come back for him.
Daniel sighed, shifting on the cold stone floor. It was getting harder to ignore the constant chill that seeped into his bones no matter where he sat. Sometimes he got up and paced to keep warm, and to keep busy.
His team hadn't been allowed to visit since he'd been incarcerated, but he had faith. It was all just a misunderstanding. This would be much easier if he wasn't the one in the cell.

He wondered where they'd ended up. There were so many planets in the galaxy that they'd been to. They could be anywhere.
He wondered if they were thinking of him.
He wondered if they'd even survived at all.
His hand moved to his newest scar, brushing over the reminder of why he wasn't with them.

He'd never imagined how it would be. An entire galaxy, and entire universe, laid bare for him to explore. Without the pesky restrictions of a mortal body, it was easy to flit from solar system to solar system, teasing the edges of nebulas and darting through stars, caressing the fringes of time itself.
Sometimes he forgot what it was like to be real. During those times, he would retreat to the nearest planet and immerse himself in the very essence of its people. Then he remembered, as if recalling a half-forgotten dream, and wondered how many months it had been.
