Birthday Post!

Yeah! It's Halloween! I'm Frida Kahlo this year, which kicks ass, I've got my hair braided and done up with a dark red flower in it, lots of thick necklaces and bracelets, a wide gold belt cinched around my waist, I let my mustache hairs grow out, colored in a unibrow with charcoal, and have on dark reddish lipstick. A textured white shirt and long black pants, and I've been wearing these awful sandals which are really attractive but they're so uncomfortable. When it's cold I wear awesome clunky combat boots - I figure Frida would have loved them.

It's interesting how accurate the costume is, too. Everybody (and I mean _everybody_) instantly says, "oh! Frida Kahlo!" I'm going dancing tonight which is also kickass, and it's just generally been an awesome birthday. Woke up late, skipped class, you know. The whole week's rocked.

On Saturday I read at the Naropa departmental reading, which was fun, though scary. I read my own stuff and something by Bhanu Kapil, which was thrilling and intense because I love her, though I wish I had been more outspoken in taking on her persona but I was embarrassed to go full into her accent. Worried that someone would be offended or something, I don't know, or just embarrassed, but I wish I had been more performative with it. I feel like I didn't do her piece justice. But it was fun all the same, and tonight's Halloween! I'm probably going to be dressing like Frida for the next couple days to come, at least until Bhanu's class on Thursday, just so I can show off...

I'm so weird. Maybe you all knew that already, but my idea of "showing off for friends" or even "showing off for someone I like" is very much, "dress up and act like Frida Kahlo" or something similar, it's like, ummm, Marlon, do you live on another planet? I base my judgments of "cool" on such weird things, and they always change too. Like I care about showing the excitement, you know, the energy that's involved in showing myself off, but I just can't do anything conventionally it seems. It's really fun, except when I'm feeling lonely, then it just accentuates the loneliness.

But no loneliness tonight! Tonight's my birthday and I'm going dancing, and I'm going to have a killer time. Well, ciao! Happy Halloween everyone!
