Summary: Sometimes, the decisions we make haunt us, no matter how hard we try not to let them. This was how it was for Eruru.
Eruru had spent the majority of her life taking care of Aruru. Their mother was long gone, and their father, as the village's chief, had had little time to look after the small, everyday needs of his two daughters, regardless of how he tried to do so.
Then their father had died, and Eruru and Aruru were alone with only their grandmother. Aruru had grieved openly, and Eruru had only allowed herself to grieve within herself, because now she had to be strong for Aruru.
When Hakuoro came along and Aruru, who had never attached to anyone but Eruru and their father, took an instant liking to him upon seeing him in their father's clothing, Eruru had been a little worried. Was it alright to let her little sister grow further and further attached to this strange man? Was it alright to let Aruru call him "Daddy" though no one really knew how long he would be around? Was it alright to let the little girl risk the heartbreak of losing a dear parent figure a second time?
But Hakuoro had shown no signs of leaving. He became their chief, and fought for their village-ultimately, that somehow ended in his conquering the kingdom and becoming king.
At some point, Eruru had grown just as attached to him as Aruru was-possibly more, because in Aruru, he was simply replacing the fading form of their father in her young memory. In Eruru, he had grown to be an irreplaceable force in her life that supported her, whom she supported in turn, who was her everything.
And then the truth had come out, and he had had to leave. He fell into a long, deep slumber whose end was indefinite. Eruru had tried to remain confident and responsible-because that was what was best for him; that was the only way that she could continue to support him, even if this was the one last time that she could.
But then she had broken down and everything had spilled out: her tears, her fears, and her love. He returned them all.
He had had to leave anyway.
Eruru had wiped her tears and by the time she had returned to everyone else, she was her usual responsible self. She had made an effort to comfort everyone in Hakuoro's party, even if they had pretended not to need it. She had used every bit of spare time she had to help the people that Hakuoro had loved so much.
But still, there were times that she looked back at her memories of Hakuoro and couldn't help a bit of bitterness creeping into her thoughts. He had as much as told her that he loved her; he had even kissed her. So why had he left her alone?
Eruru buried her face in her arms and killed the thoughts with uncharacteristic vehemence.
In the morning, she decided, she would have forgotten that she had ever thought such things.
