She looks back over her ivory coloured shoulder at him.
“I’m sorry, but I have nothing left to give.”
He shakes his head once, slowly, as if he is not entirely confident of what he is about to say. “That is not true, Amelia.”
“Oh, I assure you,” she replies coldly, her voice chilled by the desperate need to push him away. For what end? It’s not like Viktor or Marcus were around to rain down hell on them. No, she didn’t want to…to, she didn’t want to feel. He was just a man. He was just a knight, a vampire in her coven. He was just….just…
Believe the lie.
He was nothing. Meant nothing. Along time ago there was something to speak of, something to hold onto and believe in. Now, now the fight to be reunited had finally come to an end, but she had exhausted her heart and had nothing left to give. It was more worthwhile to encase her heart in ice, to accept the bliss that engulfed her when she gave into the emotional numbness then the feel the pain that came each time they were torn further apart. All she had to do was remember the day they lied to her and told her that he was dead. She never wanted to care that much again. As the last elder of the coven she couldn’t afford to. Not now when new enemies circled around them.
“I assure you that I speak the truth.” Her voice softened at the end, there was no reason to be cruel but it was easier that way. If he’d only let go. Instead, his heavy boots echoed throughout the hallway toward her. Her heart beat faster in her chest as she held her breath. What the hell did he think that he was going to do to her? Yet, with the full force and fury of his eyes on her, she found herself feeling threatened.
He grabbed her shoulders and titled his head to look at her expressions. It was like being interrogated. "Say that to me again, Amelia."
No matter how strong and effective he was, she was duly so. However, she could not say that his proximity was killing her resolve. "I have nothing left to give." Searching her face, he nodded trying to cover the pained expression on his own. Bringing her closer, his warm lips slowly pressed into her cool forehead.
"I am sorry to hear you say that, my La..my love." Stepping back, he bowed curtly and walked out of the room with a heavy heart. Watching him go was akin of ripping out her own. But an Elder had to keep her perspective. It wasn't time yet. One day, perhaps. If he still loved her. If not, she knew that he would still carry on doing his duty to the coven. Yes, she had plans. Plans for them all. For now, all she could do was love in dreams.
