PREJUDICE? IN MY HEROES?

Mar 24, 2009 13:41

So I've been seeing people talking about how Heroes kills off more minorities and women than white men. When I realized I was saying the same thing, but without actually knowing 100% for certain that this was correct, I figured I'd tally up the more major deaths (IE, people who showed up for more than a minute or two) and see what the outcome is.

* Denotes a woman
+ Denotes a woman who is also a minority

This is by no means a scientific poll ("Really?"). I just went through the "Deceased" category of the Heroes Wiki, and tallied up people who either appeared for more than a few minutes and had a name, or an important role, such as a company founder. It's definitely up for debate who should be considered "important". I also didn't bother with characters who only showed up in webisodes and graphic novels, except for Echo, who was the freaking main character of the first set of webisodes.

So this is basically what I make of this list: Women get the crap end of the deal. Sucks to be a white man if you aren't given a name, or are "bad". Mostly, if you separate the women and minorities section into two categories, the three categories are relatively even, unless you take out "bad" characters, and then minorities and women outweigh the white males very, very heavily.

So this was my morning! And I'm still foggy on the whole matter. Feel free to discuss! I'm going to go have lunch.
