Huge blowout in ontd_lost about the lack of gay characters.

-I wish LOST had more gay characters, but mostly, I wish culture in general weren't so fucking hetero-normative so there could be characters in mainstream media with alternate sexualities that aren't GROUNDBREAKING/BALLSY/FOR RATINGS.

-I believe in the whole idea of "privilege" and that if you are not a member of a certain group, you cannot fully understand "what it's like." I am a pansexual, genderqueer, upper-middle-class white person of the female sex. I cannot fully understand what it is like to be anything other than that, which is OKAY, but it means that I have to be aware of that and make an effort to not be prejudiced. This goes for people of all types. IDK, people just need to be more civil to each other, because we are all just stupid goofballs who "don't get it" much of the time.

-That said, I want to see people like me on TV. It kind of makes me angry that people don't think it's "important" for gay characters to be in media, let alone in a show that someone loves and cares about. I'm happy for Tom in lost, and 13 in House (a bisexual!? Yay!) and whatever stupid shit they're trying to do in Heroes with Claire's girlfriend (which, really, they should just have Claire be bisexual because FFS, why the fuck not?!). I love seeing the LGBTIA community represented in TV. If I had it my way, we'd start moving onto getting more bisexuals, pansexuals, transfolk and intersexed people represented. Oh, and people who are ATTRACTIVE and ASEXUAL AT THE SAME TIME (I'm looking at you, Sylar).

-The fact that this is even an issue makes me feel really, really bummed.
