So apparently I just caught the edge of the next wave of K-Pop drama? By complete accident?
Long story short, Girl’s Generation member Jessica is, as of today, not a member anymore. How much a surprise this was to her (she was apparently informed the day of her termination from the group... two weeks after she renegotiated a 3-year contract), SNSD, or the fans remain debatable, but… aw hell. I thought I’d quit K-Pop in time to avoid all of this. I like SM for their aesthetics and some of their choreographers (their music is another thing entirely), but this monkeying around with contracts is really wearing me thin.
I was extremely lucky to have missed out on Han Geng and JYJ in 2009, and I still don't know enough about EXO to really known how to feel about Kris leaving. And I'm lucky in a sense that I've already distanced myself from K-Pop enough that even this isn't going to impact my daily fan activities. But it still sucks, to look back and see how sour things have become.
ETA 20 minutes later: HOLY CRAP I MISSED SULLI TAKING A HIATUS FROM THE ENTIRE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY AS WELL. WHAT THE HELL, SM. WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL. What the fuck is happening with you and your artists that are driving them away in rapid fire?!
On the other hand, the reason why I’d caught this at all was because I was logging into my old LJ and DW accounts to watch the Yuletide community. I plan to participate for the very first time this year. So excited! Here's to hoping I'll participate in my first ever challenge successfully.
