Katsuya got home late that night and immediately began random work around the apartment. He seemed anxious and impatient, two traits he would never show in public, as he paced around the small-ish living quarters. There wasn't really much for him to do but he made sure he kept finding little odds and ends to busy himself with anyway. It was what he did when a case was bugging him.
As it got later he grew more impatient with the night; wasn't it midnight yet? Did he even have to wait till midnight? This was frustrating. Finally he sat down on the couch and stared resolutely at the television. Of course it was blank as he didn't turn it on. He just stared at the black screen, waiting. Waiting for something to appear on a television set turned off.
Nothing happened until midnight and at first Suou thought nothing would even then. But thirty seconds into it... finally! An eerie image filled with fog and vague shapes appeared before his eyes. Annoyed at the unclarity of the picture the officer got off the couch and rounded the table to kneel directly in front of the screen and stare closely at it. Something in the back of his mind was vaguely aware this was bad for his vision but that logical and overbearing side was locked out for the time being as he ignored it to concentrate on what he was seeing.
Without really realizing it he reached up with one had and set it upon the screen as if he could reach inside and pull out the image for a closer examination. What startled him was the fact that he actually did reach inside the screen! His hand went straight past the glass fixture and through into...into the screen! With a small yelp he hopped backwards and, losing his balance, landed on his butt.
He blinked up at the screen for a moment, uncomprehending and more than a little wary. Finally, steeling himself with that stoic mask he used in public relations, he readjusted his position and reached determinedly for the screen once more with his hand. Again it went through what should have been a solid object.
Taking a deep breath the officer braced himself and pushed further in with his arm. Everything went through and before he knew it he'd gone and crawled his way into the television set sitting in his living room.
Katsuya had no idea where he ended up when he was on the "other" side, but he instantly noted the thick fog floating in the air so eerily similar to the weather outside right now. At first he could see nothing but then something began to appear in the shadows before him. He narrowed his eyes as a very familiar form coalesced from the mist: himself.
Suou frowned instantly when he recognized what stood in front of him still forming out of the mist and shadows. He placed his hands on his hips and stared firmly at the doppleganger.
"No," he said solidly. "I know why you're here--to show me my past and ask me questions; to twist my feelings around and show me what it is that I truly feel when I lie to myself."
The Shadow in front of him stopped swirling around and remained in a half unfinished form. It almost looked forlorn.
"Well, I've faced you before. And I answered those questions and I figured out who I am. I might sometimes still have problems with that even now--but I don't need your 'help' anymore. I can figure it out on my own. I know when to take a step back and discover my own self." He paused to take a deep, controlled breath. "I know who I am."
With an imperceptible squeal of anguish and hate the Shadow dispersed back into the mist as if it never was. The officer relaxed. He had already conquered his darker half; he didn't need to repeat his ordeals. The Shadow could not take his form.
Katsuya glanced around. "I can't see in this fog..."
But I can, he heard in his head. A second later and a familiar black form appeared to his right and Suou didn't even bother to glance at him to confirm that it was the feline Helios. The cat's tail flickered in the mist and sent swirls fanning out around his form.
"Show me the way, Persona. We have to find these people... and help them."
With a nod from the cat, the two of them headed off into the world of the television.
