Ephraim mused upon the strange events that led up to their invitation to this prestigious school set in this other world. The fall of Ares...the return to Magvel...so much has happened in their lives, more than enough to fill a lifetime. Yet here they were given yet another opportunity to explore and learn about the world around them. This time, the conditions were far less sinister. No forced arrivals. No overpowering god entity. Just a courteous invitation and a prestigious school to test and strengthen his mind and body.
He was lucky to have so many people come in with him. His sister as always was at his side along with her ever-faithful retainer and ex-general Seth. Of course, Innes had followed him as well, partly due to his sister, but also to continue that ongoing rivalry. Whatever. Ephraim would rather spend his time with more pleasant company such as the charming young Queen who was probably out wandering the halls right now. He stepped out in his royal garb, searching for his dear sister.
Wandering the halls. That was exactly what Eirika was doing. Her arrival had been surprisingly comfortable. Seth had even stopped by and kept her company, checking on her progress, ensuring that she was enjoying herself thus far, and other things that a knight normally did for his liege. She found herself thoughtful with her talk with him. How strange he acted around her. How he stared. How his eyes held a sorrow about him that she could not place. How stern he had been. How blunt, and perhaps even to the point of rude.
Her hands laced together, her steps were slow and precise, as she reminded herself of her position. As she had told Seth, she needed to make sure she represented Frelia and Magvel as a whole absolutely perfectly. Well, perfect in her mind. If anything, with her wardrobe, she seemed so out of place in an institute. Well, one of normalcy. Her own tutelage and she had dressed in cupcake dresses and lace, not too different from how she looked after her coronation as Frelia's queen. She seemed perfectly content with the tiara adorning her blue hair and a look that plainly said she was lost in contemplation.
Since their escape from Ares, Ephraim had noticed that his sister seemed far happier than she had been before. It was a happiness that leaving that world couldn't account for. With time, he learned that his sister had forgotten most if not all of what had happened in that other world. His own memories had remained intact, but even so, he couldn't bring himself to tell her the truth. If she was happier now...then why would he want to spoil it? If she did find out, he would answer. But only if she found out on her own.
Ephraim turned the corner and was greeted by the sight of his sister approaching him from the opposite end of the hallway. She looked as radiant as always, but her resolution to portray their world in the best possible light put an extra shine on her image. He approached from the opposite end and caught her eyes, a smile gracing his features. "You look absolutely splendid as always, Eirika," he greeted with a small bow as he took his sister's hand.
Her head was held high. She seemed so perfect, perhaps. At least, that was how she wanted to be seen. She wanted to be viewed as good as she could be, not for herself, but for the sake of her home. She smiled when she placed her eyes upon her brother. A hand extended and her other lifted the skirt to her dress and she curtsied politely. "Thank you. This is no different from how I would have looked in Frelia, however. You are flattering me, the same as Seth has done so much recently. I am appreciate anyway."
Ephraim kissed her hand in his bow and straightened, his hand still resting upon hers. "I only speak what is true," he replied. "I wouldn't offer these complements if they were baseless."
She coloured a light rose shade and withdrew her hand, laughing weakly. "Thank you, then." She straightened her posture and looked him over, "You look well. How are you doing so far?"
"So far so good, though mostly because I haven't seen Innes around," he admitted. "I'm fairly certain that things will heat up as soon as he snares me into another one of his games which is bound to happen."
She lifted a hand and wagged her forefinger at her brother. "Oh, come now. I will be listening to none of that while I am here. As though I did not hear of you two enough in Magvel. Must I be subjected to it here? After all, you both should also be on your best behaviour. My actions reflect upon my king, and therefore, I refuse to interfere." Her lips were still upturned, however, so she couldn't have been too annoyed.
"He is the one who instigates these things," Ephraim said in his defense. "I'm simply following through what he started. If I am to be chided, then he should be to," he chuckled good-heartedly.
"I... seem to have a different sort of chiding for my king..." Eirika's cheeks darkened and she stepped to her brother's side, offering her arm. "Now then, escort me as a man of your calibre should."
Ephraim nodded and took her arm, leading her down the hallway of the school. "It seems as though you're adjusting quite well to the school. Have you decided yet on what you shall be studying while you're here?" he inquired.
"I decided prior to my attendance, you see. I came to pursue classes in regards to benefitting Frelia, my king, and me." She curled her arm around his gently and offered a smile. "I do like it here, however. I think it is absolutely beautiful. I think it is wonderful. Absolutely wonderful."
Ephraim held his sister close and felt that they must have looked so perfect together. The King of Renais with the Queen of Frelia side-by-side. Even if he didn't agree with Innes at times, he admitted that the marriage conveyed such strong symbolic ties to the entirety of Magvel. "I think so too myself. Quite a difference from Magvel," he commented.
And quite a bit different from Ares Arcanum...
Strong symbolic ties, hm? Yes. Eirika would have agreed with that. She did not mind a political match up. She also didn't mind hearing her king refer to her so affectionately, even if she couldn't do the same in return. At least... Not publicly. He was her king. Not exactly her beloved. Not exactly her love. But her king.
"I think in spite of enjoying my time here, I will miss our home. Do tell me, you would return home for our days allotted, yes? I would think I should. Frelia would be a mess without her leader," by that she meant Innes, "And the darling little one would be a mess without me." And by that she meant Valois, the spoiled cat who was likely not getting his London broil in her absence.
"Why of course, dearest sister. The reconstruction of Grado is still in progress and the slightest nudge could send the region into a state of turmoil. And on a lighter note, I'd like to visit those still at home. I'm sure that things at home are fine with our friends are the helm, even your spoiled cat, Eirika," he chuckled. He for once agreed with Innes and thought that his sister doted too much on the cat. If she kept it up, he was going to grow up to be huge.
A state of turmoil... I don't think any of us would want to return to that. Good thing Innes could handle that on his own, right?
She looked over to him as he spoke and she nodded in agreement. Sometimes he said everything she needed to say and that was all they actually needed. Sometimes. She loved that about him. It somehow made it easier on her. Gods, how she loved that. "I did not say I was worried about him. I suppose it is a little obvious, however. I am simply wishing the best for him. I do miss him terribly."
"You dote on Valois so much. You treat him almost as though he were your child," Ephraim teased with a light nudge towards his sister. The topic of an heir to Frelia's throne hardly came up between the two since Ephraim knew exactly how she would take it. However, with her marriage to Innes, they couldn't ignore the topic forever.
"M-m-my child?!" Eirika sputtered nervously with scarlet cheeks. She lifted a hand and batted his away. "N-nonsense! He is just a kitty. I just happen to love and care for him very much." Never mind that she couldn't remember where he came from. She'd assumed it was a stray that Seth or someone else had brought in and as a result, she grew attached to him. After all, he seemed to take an immediate liking to her.
"I just hope that this isn't indicative of how you'll be treating any future heirs. You shouldn't be sugar-coating everything," Ephraim said breezily. Luckily for him, Eirika never questioned the appearance of the cat which was the one thing from Ares that could possibly jog her memory.
"F-future heirs??" his younger sister asked. "Y-you must be teasing me!" She used her free hand to hold up the skirt of her dress, using it as a way to simply tighten her grasp upon her apparel. "I do not sugar coat anything either..." She pouted a little, disappointed in his thoughts.
"Oh come now. Don't make that face," Ephraim said and passed his hand across her face. "It was only in jest, though you're going to have to think about it eventually, Eirika."
"I will not," she replied rather simply. She wanted to avoid that conversation at all costs. She had no intentions of discussing motherhood. Not because she didn't want children. Of course she did. The idea of a little Innes running around made her want to break into juvenile giggles. Her insecurities, however, put an abrupt halt to any desire to actually pursue that avenue.
"As you wish," Ephraim said with a shrug. He guessed he couldn't talk to her about it until he was in a position to do so as well. She had her king, but...he still didn't have his queen. It was a little distressing...
"Let us be off then. Let's go explore this campus together. It'll be a nice adventure before we begin our studies."
Her cheeks darkened just a tad more and she fidgeted a little, "It... it is not as though I do not think about it, Ephraim. It is... Just..." Oh, how to put her thoughts into words. How could she admit that she felt she wasn't quite mother material? How could she admit that to her brother, much less her king?
She placed the thought aside when she turned her attention onto her brother. "Yes. Let us orient ourselves a bit more. From what I have seen, it looks absolutely beautiful here."
Ephraim nodded in agreement and for now left the issue of heirs aside. For now, he was going to take this chance to enjoy this moment with Eirika before her memories begin to stir. How he loathed the day when something comes out to remind her of her days in Ares...
