Who: Balthier and Basch fon Ronsenburg
When: Sunday night, around 9 pm
What: Even though Basch asked Balthier to come over, Basch goes to Balthier's place anyway
Warnings: mature situations
Basch was not the one to usually get angry. However, the date and timing had been ripe for the occurrence. The captain was currently pacing a path into the carpet under his feet, trying desperately not to overreact. It may have been easier, Basch surmised, if it hadn’t been but a year to the date that his brother had passed. His thoughts were on his sword and how he simply wanted to strike Vayne down for a second time.
Somehow, Balthier had a preconceived notion that Basch would be stopping by. And using that notion, he waited outside his door. This floor on the dormitories would have to put their complaints on hold until he came back. He had been keeping himself busy, and not entirely by choice. Being the leading man, he had to make time for everyone important to him, after all. "Enter stage left," Balthier said to the other. "You seem to be your cheery self today, Captain."
Basch wasn't sure when or how he ended up at Balthier's dorm room. Nor, did he question the path that his unconscious mind had taken. "I am just one big ball of sunshine." He commented dryly. In reality, he needed someone to speak with, someone who knew what had happened a short year ago. He didn't want to consider the ramifications of what he wanted to do. As much as he was no murderer, the thought of running Vayne through was a very pleasant thought.
Though it would have been two years for Balthier, the memories remained fresh in his mind. He wasn't one to forget events such as that. "No doubt," Balthier responded, the scent of sarcasm seems to be fresh in his mind. At least, they were on the same mindset. "Though I must mention. Were you not one who told me to keep calm when I had discovered his presence here?"
"You are allowed some form of hypocrisy when you reach my age." Basch murmured. "However, at this point in time, on this day in time, I am hard pressed to abide by my own words." Hands were shoved into the pockets of his slacks (the modern clothing were something Basch has yet to get used to.). He was hoping to find solitude in this community, however, it seemed like torment was destined by the Fates to follow him.
While Balthier was lucky enough to have two years of solitude (as much as he disliked it at times), he was dismayed by the fact that someone dead (and someone who SHOULD be dead) has made their presence here somehow. How that was possible, the sky pirate wasn't even able to fathom. "Age has naught to do with it. Moreso when our frustrations lie to be on the same wave of thread. Perhaps some research is on order."
"I am not a man of learning, Balthier." Basch knew of the inner workings of the military and government. Not of biology or the occult, those were left up to people who specialized in items of business he simply did not have faith in. "I only wonder... why he deserves a second chance, and yet..." The chances that Balthier knew what Basch was thinking were decently high. The people that were left behind, that deserved a chance to redeem their honor, were not being allowed it.
"I suppose it's hard to say," Balthier said, standing up. He looked out the window a bit and continued. "Perhaps this is a distant thought, but may it be that those who deserve it... do not seek it." It was a long shot, but it was perfectly plausible in the mind of the sky pirate. It would obviously, of course, depend on the circumstances of said person, and Balthier knew that Basch was thinking of two specific individuals.
"The Fates smile upon those who take life into their own hands." Basch commented with a sigh. "They are brave words, but hard to live by. Do you allow life to flow on, or do you block it and change the river in the direction you wish..." The Captain trailed off with that. He chuckled lightly to himself; perhaps he should take his own words into consideration.
Balthier then turned around to face the captain. "Humes are prone to making the wrong choices, Basch. You and I are well-acquainted with such a characteristic. Though one must remember. Not all choices are reversible. Keeping that in mind, however, I place absolutely no trust in Vayne. Which is why I earlier suggested research."
"Wrong choices," Basch echoed. That thought alone made him a bit weary. He had some choices he had been struggling with recently that were perhaps the wrong ones. “And would you forgive a man for these wrong choices, Balthier?”
"A man forgives and forgets, does he not?" The sky pirate crossed his arms at that, seemingly anticipating something. "Though, I suppose it all depends. In the case of our dear friend Solidor, I'm afraid the answer is no." And the reasoning behind that should have been more than obvious.
"Then forgive me." Basch breathed out, closing the distance between himself and the sky pirate. A hand was placed next to the brunette before he leaned in and pressed his lips against the others. There was part of him that screamed out ‘this is dangerous’ and then the other half that simply cared not for it.
And yet the sky pirate did not hold back, even though he knew there would be some backlash behind this. He knew this was long coming, however. When he released, Balthier appeared unshocked at all. "You realize how dangerous this is, do you not?" He had stated once before that he was a taken man but he held ground that what other people do, the sky pirate had no control over.
"I am well aware, Balthier." Basch knew that even the line of thinking went against his code of honor. "However, a man.... a man's heart wants what it wants." That was the only way he could explain it. Why he was doing it, why he was unafraid of the consequences. "A year of wait is a long time, sky pirate."
"A man of honor. And a sky pirate." Balthier said, trying to get Basch to compare the two. "Two different lives. And yet somehow, with one common goal. Still, the outcome of this is dangerous, and I'm afraid you and I step foot in uncharted waters. Though, I've no idea of this wait you speak of."
"Consider that you have been thought of as dead for the past year, Balthier." He frowned at that. "Of course, we all had ideas as to if you survived to pillage another day..." Was Basch the type to hold onto a 'crush' of such for a time as long as that? "The time I've been here has done naught but reawaken feelings I have held for you in the past, dangerous as they may be."
"As unintentional as they may have been, hints have been noted and acknowledged," said the sky pirate. Then again, he reads people quite well, and drops hints at it every now and then through indirect means. "Then again, they say the leading man never dies. Perhaps it will do you well to remember that, captain."
Basch laughed quietly at that. This was definitely the same Balthier that he knew before. It was nice that some things stayed the same. However, there was still something to be said of Balthier being committed. It didn't quite fit the leading man's old persona. "This has only left me with confusion in my mind and heart."
"Confusion is a normal part of being a hume, you realize," Balthier added, still as close to Basch as he hadn't been before. "Though, you must understand. I've been absent from Ivalice for over two years. Whilst gone, I was made to endure trials and tribulations." Haha, insert Phoenix Wright innuendo here. "Befriend certain humes, become a suspect of murder, overcome adversities, overcome child's play, and even become attached." Even Balthier himself was surprised that he'd feel that way towards someone else.
"And you must realize that for the past year, I have realized some important things about myself. You are aware that I have always lived for my honor." There was a deep breath. "However, there are some things, some Humes that are just as important." If Basch was going to give a compliment to anyone, that would be the highest level possible. "As much as my honor says to stay away... I am not sure if I can."
Balthier traced his own chin with his fingers, appearing to be contemplative. "To be fair, the nature of humes and honor completely differ from each other. One must take each of them by stride, perhaps compromise one for the other at certain times. Though, ignore hume nature and you become neglectful and devoid of emotion. Ignore honor, and many will devoid you of decency and perhaps mistreat you."
"Balthier, shut it." And Basch kissed the pirate yet again. Basch had been thinking along those lines for too long, hearing it from Balthier only seemed to push him into action quicker. This time, he wasn't going to let Balthier pull away as quickly. Want and need overwhelmed the captain as he pressed his body up against the sky pirates.
Somehow, Balthier let himself be roped into this. But the truth is, Balthier sort of got attached to everyone he was on that journey with that happened two years ago. Maybe more than the others, but it was attachment nonetheless. He thought it wouldn't happen again when he went to the red planet, but even then he was wrong about that. Unregretfully, Balthier let this instance continue. But he knew that doing this would have its own consequences.
Of course, Basch would regret what was happening right now. Not the fact that he was kissing Balthier, but the fact that it may in turn cause him unwanted complications. The captain pulled away slowly, blue eyes staring into Balthier's own green ones. "I may have... overstepped." The blonde said quietly.
The sky pirate shook his head. "I believe not," he started. He gave a small sigh before continuing. "If it is your fault, then so be it. It is mine as well. I allowed it to happen when you and I are aware that I am not free. Perhaps all we are to do now is take one day at a time, hmm?" It looks like Balthier will once again blame circumstance. Only this time, he seems to be on the receiving end of this.
Basch didn't know what to say about that. He only knew how he felt, the guilt should lie with him. "Balthier...." He really should leave before he does anything else stupid.
"Yes, Basch?" the sky pirate asked. In truth, Balthier had no idea what to do, either. He didn't think that he could even be taken in by temptation and act upon it. Though, he'd probably agree and have Basch leave before anything stupid happens.
"If I don't leave.. I'm going to do something we may enjoy now, but regret later.." He frowned faintly. He needed to leave, or else his honor would be completely compromised.
Balthier disagreeingly nodded. "Perhaps you are correct, Basch. But you are correct about one thing. We naught know what the future holds. I promise to keep in touch. I do wish things did not have to be this way."
It took all of his effort to move away from Balthier. "I know you will, Balthier." He wasn't sure what he was going to do after this, but there was only the future to come..
