Fear No Art

I hate to be one of those stereotypical graduate students who goes around pondering the meaning of life and "what is art?"; but, it has really been bothering me since this weekend. I mean, the meaning of life is not hard, but the "what is art?" question is. There was a 24 Hour Play Festival this weekend as part of the Fayetteville Arts Festival. I participated in the 24 Play Festival. A brief synopsis: parameters are given on Saturday, the playwright writes the play all night, hands it off to the director in the morning, and rehearses with the actors until the festival. It was something that I did not enjoy. I don't like working under that kind of pressure. It felt like a one night stand with my play. Anyway, so the plays that I saw, most of them, sucked. And the art that was displayed was this same. Is art subjective? Should craftmanship be considered? Is a leaf hanging on a wall in a gallery art??????????????????????? Is pornography art? (well, I don't believe so). But, some people do. Where are our paramenters? I do not know these answers; but, I am throwing the out there thinking some of you may know. Haha
