This weekend, I got out of town and back to my roots in Vermont, as I gathered with my extended family to scrape, power-wash, stain, and trim my mom’s house (and garage!).

(pictures of the house are found on my wordpress blog entryMy family normally gathers for Memorial Day weekend, which used to be the weekend of the dance recital for my sister ( Read more... )

I like your idea of what you'd have put out. Let's see what I can remember, and how I can do without giving away names...

We started with the candle, the bible, and the communion stuff. I put out the pine branch, a symbol of the cycle of life. Likewise, my sister put out the piece of bark from a favorite tree, one that has died and come back numerous times. Our mom put out an iris bulb because she loves gardening and irises in particular, and an IBC bottlecap as a 'placeholder' for her rings (in her bedroom where a toddler was napping) representing her faith (st. francis) and her motherhood (a mother's ring we gave her). Your sister put out a fallen birds nest, and put eggs from the kitchen in it to represent the birds nest with living eggs that was in one of the trees lining the driveway, because they made her happy and made her think of life. Younest uncle S placed his sunglsses, representing "let there be light" and his wife placed her cross that she wears as a symbol of her commitment. Their son put down a medalion with the patron saint of acting on it, which he got from a recent play, honoring both faith and his love of acting. My brother in law put down a handful of dirt and a rock because he finds himself most spiritual outside, in nature.

I think you did wonderfully with the not giving away names. That was a perfectly clear description to me! And my guesses were all reasonably accurate... though I did wonder about the bottle cap. :-)

Thank you for sharing this. I do wish I could've been there. ::hugs::
