So let me tell you about the movies you missed on
my movie meme.
3. Disney's Meet the Robinsons "Our hopes and dreams dashed, like so many pieces of a broken machiney thing." An orphan and a struggling inventor, Lewis finds something to hope for when he meets Wilbur Robinson, who takes him on a journey to the future. Discovering confidence in himself, and the joy of what family can be, Lewis is able to struggle against the silliest bad guy ever, Bowler Hat Guy, who wants to steal Lewis' invention and is at least at one point foiled, and his hopes and dreams are dashed.
8. Big Fish, a Tim Burton film that does not feature Johnny Depp. Staring Ewan McGregor, which makes it way cooler. "It was that night I discovered that most things you consider evil or wicked are simply lonely, and lacking in the social niceties." In the days before his death, Edward Bloom retells the stories of his life (flashing back to his dashing Ewan-esque youth), stories that initially frustrate his son, because the son can't understand the truth within the tall tales. The best portrayal of the power of story and the truth in fiction. I tell people to watch this if they want to understand how I read the bible. Our stories live on, and we become the story, and in that way, we are immortal.
10. Defending Your Life, staring Meryl Streep and Albert Brooks. "So, you're great people to work with, this is a great present, and I wish I could squeeze you all into one pretty woman. And if you'd like to go to my office, I'll try." That's a line from the beginning of the movie (probably not a very fair one!), before Brooks' character dies. That's not a spoiler; it's before the opening credits. In the afterlife, Daniel Miller discovers that life is about overcoming fear and the things that hold him back. In death, can he find meaning in his life, and the love and courage he needs to move on?
