I'm beginning to get the hang of what ff.net will allow and what it will take up arms against. Looks like "--" isn't stripped if it's at the end of string of dialogue, and the long dash is usually left alone if used within a sentence. I haven't had to throw in the shorter dash yet; I'll be happy if I don't have to at all, it's a bit too short for my tastes.

A little snippet? Sure, it's the least I can do. Here's the opening few lines (dashes in defiance of the new ff.net policy) of slightly pre-Nullifier Harry:

- - -
"Potter."

I looked up blearily at the sound of my name and found myself staring at a blob of pink and black, vaguely humanoid in shape. Oh. Right. I squinted down at the grimy table. I'd removed my glasses, though I couldn't remember precisely when or why. Had something to do with the dull, throbbing pain in my head, probably.

Let me tell you this about headaches: they're fantastic. Really. Like a fucking gauge for how screwed up your life is at any given time.

Mild stabbing between the eyes? Voldemort, enjoying a bracing torture session. Painful, constant pressure behind the eyes? Accidentally nullifying too many spells in a day. (Control? What's that?) A twinge, now and then, here and there: one more pleading letter or personal entreaty or narrow-eyed scorn. Would the hero of the wizarding world care to get off his arse and save the world already? Thanks no, my arse likes it right where it is--well, likes may be a bit strong, as my wooden stool was pretty bloody uncomfortable, not that one goes to a pub and gets thoroughly pissed in the pursuit of comfort. No, this was the pursuit for oblivion....

And tomorrow, I would have the dubious pleasure of the hangover headache to look forward to. Unless I managed to make myself seem really small and pathetic, and Remus caved in and gave me a potion. As it was, he told me I swigged them with the alarming frequency of an alcoholic.

"Potter, are you trying to be pathetic? Because trust me, no further effort is required."

I feel bad. Harry's life seems to be one constant headache, even on his birthday (which, in this skit, it indeed is). Bonus points if you can guess the identity of our mysterious blob. ;)

She lives! Just kidding everyone thinks college life is full of nothing but fun and games, and well there is a fair amount of that there is also a disproportionately large amount of time devoted to the painful reality which is class work and studying, particularly at a place like MIT.

Sorry about the FF.net problems I just noted that issue the other day, glad it is becoming at least mildly amusing. I have a pretty recent copy of Nullifier, well relatively speaking, I copied it the last time you updated so back in August. If you need it I could email it over.

Thanks for the snippet, it is delicious. I will guess that the fuzzy humanoid blur is Pansy Parkinson, the pink initially hinted at Tonks but the tone is all Pansy.

Good luck with the writing. Hope to get another wonderful cookie soon, as a I am in desperately curious to see what Warin and Salazar are going to say about Godric and Harry's little adventure, and its outcome.

I managed to get Nullifier fixed up. Oddly enough, it was only chapter ten that suffered from the stripping of legitimate hyphens; the rest were fine. Still, I was able to correct a handful of typos as I went through the chapters, including a rather appalling number in chapter twelve.

Hah, I meant to imply flesh with the pink, but I thought it might sound iffy enough to be misinterpreted. I'll have to think of a better way to phrase it.

Ah, the reactions to the adventure, yes. I always have to stifle an inappropriate urge to cackle evilly. And poor Sirius and Remus...better if they don't know the full truth of just how much trouble Harry'd gone and got himself into. Though they can probably guess.

Now that we've passed the six-months-since-update mark, guilt is starting to press in, so you can expect me to be getting myself into writing mode for Nullifier soon. :)

Aedalena....

I miss your story! I miss something you've written... I don't even care if it isn't remotely to do with your story!

Now that you're getting close to the year mark, does that mean you'll be writing even harder?

I know I say this every time I write, but would it be possible to get a snippet of something to tide us over? We miss you!!!!! (And I'll still accept a really really belated birthday present!)

ooh, a PRE Nullifier Harry! As soon as you said that, my curiousity was piqued =D

I love the headache analogy, it's definitely true! Although... my headaches don't mean quite the same things as Harry's I'm sure.

As for who the blob is? Pansy does seem likely, as Ryn pointed out, but I hadn't really seen her and Harry as being 'buddies'. But I have no better option to present of my own.. (The pink did seem to hint of Tonks, I agree.. the words hint of Malfoy (Malfoy and pink, can you picture it??) so Pansy seems to work..) However, in cases such as this, I always like to be surprised. Something about being able to figure a writer's intentions out just makes the story not as interesting to me anymore. So I generally don't try and guess anymore when I come up against cliffhangers! Odd.. I know..

Not too odd. It's been a while since I've read something with a cliffhanger, but I think my general reaction is, "Aaaaaahh! No! How could it end here! How?" And then, after a few more agonized, wordless noises, I wander off and generally forget about it until the next update, hah.

Pre-Nullifier Harry is interesting to write; hopefully he will be entertaining to read.

Oh, I'm sure he will be! Anything written by you seems to be entertaining.. I wonder, do you think you could do something to my Biology textbook? Hah.. just kidding!

But yes, I am very excited to read more of Harry, both pre-Nullifier and Nullifier era...
