Some of the pro-Proposition 8 ads actually make me queasy.
I am not normally the sort of person who gets sick to her stomach over these things, but these are just disgusting.
"Vote Yes On Proposition 8! Because children are too dumb to understand reproduction without a working model!"
"Vote Yes On Proposition 8! Because I think gay sex is gross!"
"Vote Yes On Proposition 8! Because schools are going to make our children gay!"
Seriously. What. The. Fuck.
There are a lot of arguments against this kind of sick, bigoted, prurient, narrow-minded thinking. I'm not going to repeat them, because everyone's heard them before. I will say that my own marriage is a very important part of my life, and I think that it's really fucking sad that homophobes want to deny that to people on the basis of their own bigotry. Gay people exist. They aren't going to magically disappear if we deny them equal rights for long enough. All that 'traditional marriage' bullshit is exactly that--bullshit. Until a couple hundred years ago, 'traditional marriage' was an economic transaction between the patriarchs of two families. I don't see anyone seriously arguing that we go back to that, so can we just cut the crap, here?
"Oh, all we're doing is protecting marriage! Proposition 8 won't have any effect on the rights of gay people to live however they want to!"
Oh, well, yeah. Except for that minor 'getting married' thing. Not a big deal. They can still shack up and have evil filthy gay sex, after all! Which is really what this is about. Bigots don't want gays getting married because that makes them like actual people or something. We can't have that!
