15) Small portable dragons are not convincing weapons.

‘What,’ said Cobb, suspicion dark in his eyes, ‘are the two of you doing now?’

Arthur looked round and shrugged, and at least that was normal, but Eames stifled something that sounded suspiciously like a giggle, and Cobb’s concern blossomed into full-fledged anxiety.

God alone knew what was up with these two recently. There had always been tension between them, yes, but since the Fisher job, there had been something of a paradigm shift in their relationship. Cobb had a policy to try and keep out of work place friendships and enmities, but right at the moment he was starting to think maybe it was time to take a more hands on approach.

He watched them for a few minutes more, but they’d settled down, Arthur’s familiar voice running through facts and figures, and Cobb had turned away cautiously optimistic that this had been an aberration that wouldn’t affect the job.

I should learn to listen to my instincts, he thought an hour later, watching the two men running havoc through the dream and blasting projections with two small dragons.

He let them run themselves out before he rounded them up, and at least Arthur had the grace to look shamed.

‘Why?’ he asked, and Arthur launched into an explanation about alterative weaponry. Cobb tried to follow it, but one of the dragons - the one under Eames’s arm - turned deep purple eyes on him with a look eerily reminiscent of his childhood dog, denied a walk.

‘They’re not convincing weapons,’ he said at length, when Arthur had trailed off. ‘This won’t work and I just don’t understand why you are even trying it.’

He was addressing himself to Eames. It was easier to believe that this was Eames’s fault, but Cobb had known Arthur for too long now, and the dragons were ridiculously endearing in a very Arthurish way he recognised from listening to his children’s favourite uncle make up bedtime stories.

He snatched his hand back from where it had been scratching the dragon under its chin and shot himself out of the dream.

And yes, he noticed it took the others another five minutes to wake up as well, but adopting the motto that ignorance was bliss, he chose not to say anything about it.
