Arthur sits in the dark, tied to the chair. The door opens and Arthur tries his best not to tense. It’s hard though, knowledge of what’s to come creaking on each step. Arthur closes his eyes and tries to remember that he has to breathe whenever he can. It is the only thing he can focus on.

Blue and orange dance on his skin and Arthur grits his teeth as pain flairs hot and steady. Arthur opens his mouth; the screams come in waves until Arthur can no longer stand it. Darkness is a heaven of its own.

Years later when red is found and Mal is lost, Arthur goes back to what he knows. The fire burns bright taking him back to the place that made him a man. Arthur is lucky that scarification has become popular, his lies about his marks of endurance. Men, women find them sexy, they don’t question how random they are or how they say nothing of significance.

Not even Mal or Dom knows, it’s the secret of Arthur’s life and the one thing Eames despise about Arthur. If Eames had his way Arthur would be wrapped in swaddling cloth and hidden away from the world forever. If Eames had his way Arthur would bear no marks of his formative years that left him unflinching in the face of pain.

Mal in her Cobb incarnation took great joy in finding new sadistic ways to incapacitate Arthur once Cobb’s subconscious understood that Arthur did not respond to pain in the typical fashion. Arthur sometimes believes it’s the only way he can feel when he runs from Eames.

For two years Arthur follows Cobb, but the truth is he’s running. He was supposed to have the life that Mal and Cobb had with Eames. Except he forgot something, that fairy tales were only nightmares with a happier ending for a little while. Mal had reminded him of that, she went to from Beauty and the Beast to Hansel and Gretel mixed with Little Red Riding Hood.

Arthur, coward that he is, thinks he can outrun Eames forever, but he forgot one thing, that the fairytales that had the best ending did so because no one gave up. Eames does not give up, he does not chase, that’s not his style; he waits. Eames is a master at waiting, forging is all about patience.

And then inception happens, and Eames decides that he has waited enough, it’s time to give Arthur what Mal taught them to believe in, what Cobb risked his soul for, what Arthur always wanted, a happy ending.
