"Never go to the surface!"

Arthur scowled as his brother hurried him further down, away from the light breaking on the ocean surface.

"But why? Nothing happened," he grumbled, chubby hands cradled around his pet octopus and tiny tail flexing gamely to match the older merman's pace. "Besides, I had to find Oscar. He escaped again and I had to go get him. It's my job to protect him!"

"Look, there's nothing for you up there, okay? Just those crazy birdpeople who try to steal our fish if they can," Dom growled back, clearly not buying a single word. Finally, he sighed at Arthur's mutinous, stubborn pout and scooped the little merboy under up his arm, increasing his speed even more as they spiraled downward towards the glittering mercity.

"It'll be my tail on the hook if Mother finds you gone from your nursery bed, so just don't, okay?" Dom gave him a small, conspiratorial smile. "I'll take you to the sea horses if you're good."

He took Arthur's silence as agreement and Arthur didn't bother to correct him. As much as he hated to disappoint his big brother, Arthur knew he wouldn't be able to stay below. He had already made a promise to one of "those crazy birdpeople", only this one hadn't seemed crazy at all.

The birdman, boy really, had seemed so nice and even helped Arthur find Oscar hiding in some floating driftwood. Afterwards, Arthur had given him a severe warning about what would happen if he tried anything funny before thanking him in an equally severe manner. Oddly enough, that made the birdboy smile, displaying slightly crooked teeth.

Before Arthur could say anything more, or even think about why the other boy's smile made him feel strangely warm inside, he heard Dom calling for his name from below.

Quirking another warmth-inducing smile, the birdboy flew up and made his way swiftly towards the shoreline, but not before calling out that he would be in the same area come the morrow.

Abruptly brought out of his reverie as Dom started chattering about the trade caravan due to arrive the next day, Arthur began to plot his next trip to the surface. Maybe it was time for Oscar to stage another daring escape.
