I haven't actually written in live journal for over 6 months, but I was thinking the other day "you know, I don't have anything that's just for journalling in general. I have my business blog, my work blog, but not a personal one. Oh yeah, I forgot about livejournal."
So, why not.
Man, it seems like awhile since I wrote that last entry when I was just learning HTML. HTML! Like 30% of the computer literate world knows this language at least in some form. I'm happy to say that I've gone a lot further.
I'm currently a location-independent web developer and blogger. I don't go to an office anymore for work, but get a large portion of my income from one company, who I do web design/development for all from home/Panera/outside/Portland/Colorado/Minneapolis/wherever. Life is great. Because I'm not tied to one place I am planning on traveling a lot more, taking more time to myself and taking on projects for fun/just to learn. I'm very excited about the year to come.
I can tell you that the commuting, the office politics, the "being told what to do" life at work was never for me. I am very free right now, but it took a big risk to get here. I basically moved across the country for the 2nd time in two years and in order to continue working with the same company I had to start working remotely. I risked losing the job entirely and everything I had built up in Portland, but so far it's been worth it. I really enjoy working with them so far.
If there is any lesson to take from this -
If you are ever having a difficult time deciding between two options, always choose the more challenging/risky one unless it's TOO out there. It's easy to get complacent in life and just let the years pass by staying in the same job for the security, the same dead-end relationship (not talking about mine!), making money your first priority, staying in the same place and MISSING OUT on life.
You could have so much more.
Unless you are already happy of course, or you are doing something really good for the world. If this is so, then by all means stay where you are.
