Most of my family (and Annette's) are on the east coast. Annette's mom lives in Brighton Beach in NYC and her sister in Boston. My mom lives in Framingham (which is about 20 miles from Boston) and my dad lives in Manhattan. One would think this was a perfect thing for us, since we can go visit family together and it gives us a place to live at some point in the future that would be close to everyone.
Well, it's HALF nice, if there is such a thing.
I love that we can come out here and spend time with most of our families on the same trip. I've made the NYC to Boston loop at least 5 times now, and my parents are both a lot of fun to visit. They take good care of me, keep me fed and make sure I dress warmly :) Annette might get into a school in NYC (Columbia) or Connecticut (UConn.) and my brother may end up living in Albany, NY if a job interview goes well. We'd all be a big, happy New England/East Coast family.
Only one problem with this: I don't really like the east coast as much! Part of the reason is just that I like nature, mountains and the laid-back feel of the west. The other part is that it's pretty crowded out there and it's nice to be able to get away from the throngs of people that inhabit many of these cities. Where the hell do people in Brooklyn go if they need to get away from everyone? New Jersey? The whole state is a megalopolis.
I also seem to have found my perfect city in Portland, somewhat by accident. If we don't leave the US altogether in five years there is no place I'd rather live than Oregon, but we aren't likely to stay there after this year.
Anyone else out there have a "Favorite coast"?
