Traditional readings For this day of advent:
Isaiah 54:1-10; Luke 7:24-30

Today's prayer:

God of salvation,
you promise us strength and courage in our lives
if only I ask.
You forgive me and touch me with your enduring love.

My past life does not matter.
You have forgiven me
and you love me with such tenderness.

As I ponder the blessings of the days ahead,
and am so grateful for your forgiveness,
I ask to feel the jubilation and song
break out in my life today.

Today's moment of reflection:
He sent John the Baptist before him as a messenger, heralding his arrival. It was a tap on the shoulder, a warning that we would soon have to prepare the way. What is not now as our Lord would have it on his return? What can we change? What paths can we straighten in our hearts and minds?

Recipe of the day:

Baked apples in butter/brandy sauce

4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
1½ cups brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon allspice
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 tablespoons butter
1 cup brandy

Preheat the oven to 400ºF (200ºC).
Place apples in a shallow baking dish. Mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice and nutmeg; pack the mixture into the cores of the apples and pile the remaining on the tops. The tops of the apples should be covered. Place 1 tablespoon of butter on top of each apple. Pour the brandy into the dish, drizzling over the apples. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, or until apples can be sliced with a spoon. Serve in a bowl with some ice cream, and spoon sauce over. The sauce will be slightly runny.

This makes a great topping for vanilla ice cream.
