Hello advanced knitters:

I am planning a bulky sweater for myself. Because I dislike sweaters that cling at the hips, I want to put in side vents. I've never done this before, nor have I come across instructions that seemed particularly clear to me.

What I'm thinking about doing is this: casting on for the front and back with about 4 inches fewer stitches than I need, knitting for about 5 inches, then casting on 2 inches worth of stitches at the right and left. Later, I'll pick up stitches along the vertical edge of the vent, and knit a 2x2 rib.

What I'm not sure about doing is how to attach the top edge of the vent-ribs to the rest of the sweater (the two inches worth of stitches that I cast on after knitting for a while). Should I just sew that 2 inch side in or is there some technique for picking up the side of cast on stitches as you knit across?

I'm hoping this makes sense!
