U2 hails from Ireland, Green Day from California, the Goo Goo Dolls from Buffalo. New Orleans artists like Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis get to watch the game from the stands. It warms my heart and soul to learn that this is how you re-christen a city, apparently: with the same plastic production values that give us intermission at the Aloha Bowl.
I do not deny that their intentions are good, but their execution is pathetic. It's not just the thought that counts. Thanks, ESPN, for making a joyous occasion into a fucking halftime show. I look forward to three hours of saccharine platitudes from such great orators as Joe Theismann and Michele Tafoya.
(Though they do get bonus points for having Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint perform the National Anthem.)
